I have taught art since the age of 15 and have extensive experience with College Students, Children, and people making art on their own. I have taught at Boulder University, Denver University, Metro State University, Rocky Mountain School of Art and Design. I currently teach at Naropa University and Colorado Early Colleges. I have ample experience teaching drawing, painting, and any other media. I love teaching kids and can adapt my teaching style to any environment.
My life and artwork revolve around my own personal experience. I am a painter, sculptor, and multimedia artist. I use energy, emotion, and a physicality in creating my artwork. I usually start out with a vague idea about the emotional impact I want the piece to have, but I rarely have any thought out plan of what the finished piece will look like. I let my intuition, body movement, and emotional state guide the piece out of my mind and onto the canvas. I reserve all judgment until the final stages of the piece.
I have often said that I hate painting. I mean that sometimes the process can be excruciating for me, because I am not satisfied with what the painting looks like prior to being finished. However, the last 10 or 15 minutes of the painting is the best part. I get euphoric and excited about how it turns out. I think to myself, that is what I was thinking, really, without thinking at all.
I was born in Texas and moved to Colorado in 1987. I was tired of sandstorms, and I wanted to live in a place that was beautiful and green.
I am a founding member of EDGE Gallery and I have taught at Metro Community College of Denver, University of Denver, and CU Boulder. I have a BFA from Texas Tech University, and a Master's degree from The University of Denver. I have been teaching since I was 15, so over 35 years.
For the last several years I have focused on what I call conceptual abstraction. It is based on color, action, and some personal and emotional ideas. For my work I am exploring a landscape of sorts. There is usually a background and foreground, vibrant and moody colors, and an occasional ghostly image or two. I want people to make up their own minds about exactly what these images are, but I try to point the viewer in a particular direction. I want people to enjoy my artwork and to see something new in the paintings every time they view them.
I have been at Metro for over 13 years, have taught at the University of Denver, and Rocky Mountain School of Art and Design. I am experienced and can teach a wide variety of media. I am flexible with my class, so contact me today. I provide discounts for multiple students and can work out any curriculum you need. I have my own working studio that is perfect for students, they can be messy and not worry about ruining your space.
