Describe a recent event you are fond of.
My Trumpet section went farther than they ever had in the history of the school. They carried the band to their first finals trip in Marching Band competition. They were competitive despite their small numbers. I taught them to sound like two people, because they HAD to. Different circumstances call for different solutions. They listened, and they shocked ears!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
You want a teacher who will take you where you want to go. Not someone with an 80 year old prescription for methodology.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are my goals? How high is my level of passion and commitment to evolving on the instrument? What joy do I wish to gain? What Styles will bring me that joy? Do I possess the desire and motivation to take on the challenges of each new song and style I wish to learn?
