About

Wightman designed and implemented the first CSU Rams mental conditioning curriculum in June 2012. "There are only a hand full of division one programs that have a formal mental conditioning program and those that do have improved each year of implementation", says Wightman. Lowell started the 2012 season after completing his doctoral studies in educational leadership in the CSU School of Education.

Wightman arrived in Colorado in 2004 after living in a suburb of Chicago, where he raised his two kids for 24 years. Wightman developed his mental conditioning skills working with Illinois athletes such as Antwaan Randle EL (Washington Redskins), Eddie Curry (Chicago Bulls) and Curtis Granderson (New York Yankees) from 1996 to 2000. From 1998 to 2000 he coached the Illinois Wolverine basketball club and in 2000 coached the U16 team to an AAU National Championship.

Wightman's passion for sports was shared by many mental conditioning pioneers such as Tim Grover, author of the book Relentless and trainer to NBA stars such as Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. They met in 1990 when Wightman was assisting local college teams with leadership and creating mental toughness strategies at Loyola Chicago, DePaul University and Northwestern. Wightman supported head coaches Joey Meyer at DePaul and Kevin O'Neil at Northwestern with leadership and mental toughness issues.

"Building trust with high performance athletes is essential and Lowell sincerely builds trust quickly" says Josh Lafrik, Mental Conditioning Specialist at Chicago Cubs, Chicago, IL In 2012 collaborated with IMG in preparation for the 2012 CSU football season. In a March 2013 Huffington Post article Wightman shared "the physical demands of college football require building a strong bridge between mind and body".

Wightman is the founder of 360 Mindset, and the author of the Master Coaching course offering. Lowell has a BBA-Finance from the University of Iowa, a Med-Administration and Supervision, University of Phoenix, and doctoral candidate at Colorado State University, in Human Performance & Educational Leadership. While at the University of Iowa Wightman played basketball for Dick Schultz in 1973 and then Lute Olson during the 1974-75 seasons.

The process of instructing students to desired outcomes is very rewarding, but the expression on a students face after delivering more than they expected is the best. When I add teaching and discovering new methods that students can excel at a smile come to my face. I love being a coach and teacher because I immediately see I am helping someone improve while becoming a better person.

I have always been a trainer, teacher or coach. I started in 1979 as medical sales trainer who coached basketball and baseball as a hobby. Throughout the last 40 years I have gained experience and education that has given great friendships and memories with elite athlete and business professionals. Both of my parents were teachers and coaches. So, I have always been around a learning environment and energy that promotes discovering the best in everyone.

I have worked with all ages. My youngest athlete was a 9 year old auto racer. Currently my oldest athlete client is 37. I work with athletes in all versions of sports and executives in any type of business focus. My focus is on human performance and the people or things that influence elite performance outcomes.

Every year there are multiple moment of excellence that are memorable. In 2018 a women's volleyball client joined her team at the Colorado State Tournament Finals. My work with her allowed me the opportunity to work with her coach and team members. At the mid season mark the team was playing well but was not sure what their season ending goals were for the team. Each player was clear about their personal goals, but as a team they hesitated discovering team goals. I put the team through visioning exercises to begin thinking about an "end in mind". At the completion of the season each team member could clearly see where their effort and focus was taking them. They finished the post season in the State finals and a second in State trophy. Creating a vision provided confidence for each team member to deliver their best without hesitation.

Work with a training/coach that can give examples and demonstrate trust. Anyone can tell a story but those that deliver results that fit your needs can demonstrate methods and strategies at anytime. For example, ask a teacher to show you how to (pick a skill or technique). From their style and technique you should begin to feel a sense of trust and confidence/

How do you build trust with students?

What do you expect of me physically during my training?

How will measure if I am succesfull?

What do you look at to evaluate if I am prepared or capable to perform what you ask of me?

How will you know if I am mentally prepared to deliver what you ask of me?
