About

I've been obsessed with photography and taking pictures since I was 11 years old. I've been TEACHING photography since 1988. First at New York's New School for Social Research, at the NYC Department of Education, at the Scarsdale Adult Education School at Mamaroneck Continuing Education and privately in my own studio. I am a trained teacher, not just a photographer who is offering lessons. I know how students of all abilities and levels learn. I have a master's degree in education as well as a master's in TV & Film. My lessons are objective with well-defined outcomes. Each lesson comes with an assignment that can be evaluated easily and directly. I sometimes use live models when teaching lighting classes.

Whatever your level of expertise, be assured that you will have ample room to grow and learn from my techniques.

To me, Photography has been a lifelong endeavor with which I have fallen in love over and over again. Teaching is also a rewarding experience and something that I love to do as well. Watching students learn and grow is just the best reward for doing something I have loved all of my life and to get to do them both has been absolutely wonderful.

The ability to tap into the vast reservoir of institutional knowledge that Bill has accrued over decades as a professional photographer was really a privilege. Regardless of your skill set, Bill will bring your game up several levels. In addition to the hands-on lessons, youll get informative blog posts, tips on how best to leverage your current photog kit, and what gear to consider to add. Most importantly, youll acquire considerably more confidence in your shooting - and someone you can always tap into should it ever waver. Highly recommend Bills services.

I have been taking one-to-one private classes in my home studio with William in the last month or so, and I love it! We started with the basics; the class structure is a nice mix of exercises and informative lectures that, for a beginner like myself, is very helpful. He is not just a well-experienced photographer and teacher, but he is a fantastic person as well. Williams teaching style is easy to follow; he is very patient and, most importantly, makes learning enjoyable. A month ago, I was afraid to pick up my camera, and now thanks to William, I can take pictures with studio lighting confidently. Not to mention I am taking pictures in Manual mode from day one! I highly recommend William for everyone who wishes to learn photography! His passion for photography shines through his teachings - Zsuzsanna Winn

    Frequently asked questions

I find out what level of achievement they are at and then tailor lessons designed to help the student develop his/her own particular style with emphasis on getting to know their equipment so that the taking of photographs becomes second nature. I usually work with objective assignments. That way, we can more easily assess whether or not the images are successful. It works much better than a subjective comment, which depends more on someone's feelings and from which no one learns much.

MA - Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, NY - Education

$75 per hour for home instruction with a 2-hour minimum plus travel expenses (unless student comes to the studio).

Workshops are less expensive. See website for details.

Suggested a lighting course to the New School for Social Research, NYC which was finally accepted. I went on to teach in my NYC studio for ten years after that.

All types from art students to continuing education learners. The ones I love are those who have no real experience with digital photography because I have been able to take people who have literally been afraid to use a new camera and bring them to the point where they have developed very good portfolios of work.

Check out references and education. Find someone who knows how to teach, not just a practitioner. Also, look for those who truly love their work and the teaching of it.

    1. Decide WHY you want to learn more. Is it just to become more proficient? Or, are you interested in photography professionally?

    2. What EXACTLY do you wish to learn? Are you shooting mostly for yourself and family or for others?

    3. Determine what your level is. Are you a beginner or somewhere beyond that?
