About

Hi! My name is Janai. I am a DC based self taught Visual artist.

I am a portrait artist, mural painter and teacher. I also design homegoods and textile designs for clothing and others accessories. I teach in DC public schools working with children with truancy and behavioral issues. I do private lessons with children, teens and young adults who have mental health disorders. I teach Seniors at a local wellness center in the city and I also teach private and group lessons to kids and adults. Some evenings I also host paint and sip parties at local restaurants in DC. I am big on us ing my art to support the community and give back.

I get excellent results as a teacher. Students always comment on my deep level of patience and ability to encourage. I care about what I'm doing and it shows. I left my corporate job about 7 years ago to Perdue art as a full time career. I truly love using my gift of art as a full time job. I am very passionate about my craft. I use skills learned from previous positions I held to deliver excellent customer service and a great experience.

My service stands out because of my work ethic and professionalism.

Frequently asked questions

I begin with an assessment and from there create a lesson plan that reflects the skill level and interests of the student.

I am a self taught artist. My father is also an artist and much of what I know came from watching him work in this field. I have studied several years and have been offered teaching positions based on my skill level as an artist and my ability to break down my technique into a simple step by step process.

I charge 35 per hour per student. Discounts for 3 or more Students per class.  Students are required to provide their own art supplies. (Sketchbooks, paper, canvas and paint.)  I don't mind picking up all needed supplies and being reimbursed. I also do provide some supplies (easles, pallets, pencils, paint brushes, rulers etc.)

I started teaching private sewing and drawing lessons in my home a few years back. I didn't expect for it to be as popular as it had been or the main part of my career. It grew very fast via word of mouth. My clients all really love my teaching style.

I've worked with every age group from toddlers to seniors. Seniors and middle schoolers are my favorite groups to work with because they have the most spunk. I've also taught large diverse groups for sip and paint events in the city.

I do face painting by word of mouth for children's events. I really love thinking out side of the box in regards to this craft. I talk to the children and we have great conversations. I always encourage them to try art as a way to relax and have fun at home. When Im done the child feels good about themselves and they are wearing a beautiful piece of art that is unique to them. The looks on their faces are priceless when they see the finished art.

I would say to be prepared for fun but also be prepared to be challenged. Art is a learned skill that comes by practice. The good thing is if you live to create you will begin to see yourself getting better and better over time.
