The Studio promotes classical approach in fine art education which is based on traditional methods used by European academies.
This approach includes:
~ working from life models;
~ thorough drawing, understanding of the structure and anatomy of the human figure;
~ the principals of creating a three-dimensional illusion by using corresponding tonal values, such terms as highlight, light, shade, reflection, and cast shadow;
~ color mixing, including seeing the color in relation to other colors, finding appropriate pigments on one’s palette, flesh tones mixing specifically;
Our gallery often has student work exhibitions. It is very rewarding to see such high professional results.
Winter Place Studio was founded by two artists back in 1996 and now has two locations in Bethesda and in Georgetown. Both artists are graduates of St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts.

Victor and Natasha are patient teachers with a good sense of humor and very high standards. No matter where a student begins with them, they will work with you to make you the best artist you can become!
Love this class! Amazing teachers and great students. Enjoying it every week for 7 years now!
I studied for some ten years at Winter Palace Studio, and it's been by far the best art learning experience of my life. I'd been drawing and painting, casually, all my life, taking lessons at various places when my time allowed. After I retired I started studying with Natasha and Victor at Winter Palace Studio; the difference between the quality of the work I did there and my previous work is dramatic. Besides being delightful as people, Natasha and Victor have high standards - none of the "if it feels good, it is good" approach of many art classes. But they know how to teach their students to approach those high standards, and both the process and the results are rewarding.
The teachers Natasha and Victor are graduates from the best Russian art school in St. Petersburg - Repin Academy of Fine Arts. They are both very talented artists and deducted teachers. The classes are small and students get plenty of individual attention. The experience is enlightening, and results are amazing. I take these lessons for years and it is most delightful night of my week.
New students feel comfortable in a small group environment. They immediately get a lot of attention.
Our instructors are academically trained artists with twenty years of teaching experience and professional carriers.
The tuition for a 15-session semester is listed in the course schedule. We also have a half semester option.
The Academy of Fine Arts diploma includes a teaching degree. We started teaching soon after graduation.
We work with students of all levels, from beginners to professional artists. If someone is willing to study art through classical methods they are welcome to the studio.
We recently had a special landscape workshop. As every workshop we have it resulted in the exhibition of student works at the galley. It is very rewarding to see such high professional results.
