About this pro

I've been teaching trumpet for 20 years and I'm an active pro player and play with many well known national artists. Most notably, I played with Chuck Brown for the last 14 years of his life which has blessed me with becoming a well known player myself. In addition to my own private students, I teach a master class every Wednesday for DCPS where my focus is jazz. I just moved to Glenn Dale MD and I'm hoping to connect with new students in the area. I teach the fundamentals of trumpet playing regardless of what type of music the student is into. The mechanics of good trumpet playing is largely the same across all styles.

The thing I enjoy most about teaching is giving away a gift that lasts a lifetime. Even when young students may not fully realize the benefits they're receiving from lessons, I take great pleasure in knowing I am contributing to their development that will last throughout their lives. The benefits of learning music go far beyond the obvious. It is well known that studying music lights up many different parts of the brain, but it is less widely known just how profound and long lasting those benefits are. Brain plasticity and memory strength are two of the most researched and scientifically proven benefits of playing music. And I am lucky to be in a position to facilitate such wonderful benefits to kids in their formative years.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I like to have a brief email exchange or a quick chat on the phone to learn a bit about the new student. Mainly I like to find out experience level, musical goals and what type of music the student is interested in before the first lesson.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am classically trained and also a jazz musician. I left college after two years to go on the road and never looked back. After school I continued to take lessons myself from some of the greatest trumpet players/teachers in the world. Over time I have continuosly learned more and more about music and trumpet playing. I've gone through many intense periods of learning in my life and the best lessons have come to me from my real world experience playing with many legends in the music business. During the last 10 years I have toured with Prince, Chuck Brown, Bootsy Collins, Larry Graham and many others.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

I offer weekly lessons as a monthly subscription only. 45 minute weekly lessons are $199/mo. paid in advance via credit card. I do not do makeup lessons if the students cancels. If PG Co. schools are closed due to weather on a lesson day, then I will make up that lesson. In the unlikley event that I need to cancel a lesson, I will makeup that lesson. Regarding the subscription, some months have 5 lesson days, other months have only 4 or maybe even 3 in some cases. My subscription price accounts for this so your bill is always the same. My existing customers love this for budgeting purposes and ease of use. No need to track lessons and read confusing invoices.

How did you get started teaching?

I begain teaching undergraduates at Elon College in 1988. Soon after retirning to Wash DC I resumed teaching at Music and Arts in Rockville MD. I have taught students off and on for over 20 years. Now that I have a family I don't like touring anymore so I'll be teaching more nowadays.
