About
Dawn began studying the flute at age 8 in the California Contra Costa County public school system, then later with private teachers in Pretoria, South Africa and oboist, Dr. Robert O’Boyle at the American School in Lima Peru. She attended high school in Ft.Lauderdale, Florida where she continued under the tutelage of Ms. Lisa Szpak achieving blue medalist status for solo and ensemble performance at the state level.
Dawn graduated from Florida State University in 1990 where she studied medieval and Renaissance music with the FSU Collegium Musicum, was coached by Dr. Charles DeLaney on baroque flute and mentored by Dr. Lana Johns, a student of the legendary Geoffrey Gilbert. In her spare time, she performed with the University Concert Band, Tallahassee Chamber Orchestra and was a proud member of the world renowned FSU Marching Chiefs.
In 1992 Dawn moved to the Philadelphia area, attended graduate school at Temple University and taught at the Medford Music School. In 1994 Dawn began studying with the celebrated concert flautist, Ronna Ayscue. Shortly after, she married her loves of film and music by taking a job with NFL Films as a music editor, giving emotion to programming on FOX, HBO, Showtime, History Channel, ESPN & NFL Networks and working as assistant to resident composers, Tom Hedden & David Robidoux.
Dawn continued her music education in South Jersey with Dmitri Kasyuk of the Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow and with Philadelphia Orchestra flautist, Loren Lind while teaching flute students of her own, performing chamber music with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, working as a studio recording musician, freelance flautist, musician contractor, as well as playing with the Shrewsbury Quartet headed by cellist, Tony Gizzi.
Dawn moved to Charlotte in 2008, after being recruited to work for NASCAR Media Group, to continue her work in sports television, winning two Emmy Awards for direction and production. It is here that she finally followed her dream of opening a small town music school to foster the growth of music in students of all ages.
For the last seven years Dawn has owned the Huntersville Music Academy in Huntersville NC and in currently living in Boca Raton, Florida.
Dawn has nearly 30 years of teaching experience and specializes in finding creative ways to nurture the beginner student so that their love of music lasts a lifetime.
