Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I typically evaluate a players knowledge, experience, and what they are hoping to achieve.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I come from an athletic family and was raised by coaches. My parents are cross country skiing coaches and my sister ran track. I began playing tennis at the age of six and was ranked in top ten in Russia in eighteen and under. I was also ranked in top three hundred in the world as a junior. I have co-captained a team to two Southland Conference championship titles at Division I level representing The University of Texas at San Antonio.
As a teaching professional I have had the privilege to learn from the best. I worked at John Newcombe Tennis Ranch, Roddick Total Tennis, and Macci Tennis Academies with athletes who won junior Grand Slam titles and pro tournaments. I am proud to say that I have helped to develop adult leagues and teams at club level also. As of now I have served as a Head Professional in two clubs for a total of eight years.
I continue to learn more by attending courses, seminars and conventions above and beyond what is required, in order to provide the best insight within my coaching.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
It is $80 per hour and $40 for half an hour private lessons.
How did you get started teaching?
At sixteen I became a hitting partner for younger players. In college I taught summer camps and did adult night clinics. After graduation I started teaching full time while I was job searching in the international business field. I realized pretty quickly that teaching tennis was what I was passionate about. I wanted to learn and experience coaching at all levels and to become a professional in order to build a career. I'm fortunate because I have had and still run into excellent mentors plus I never stop pushing myself to learn more and more on my own through reading and research. It's a lot of fun!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with and enjoy working with students of all levels, ages and abilities from age five to eighty, in addition to professional players.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I have three sons. I love spending time with them, especially watching and playing sports like tennis and baseball together.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
First of all, I believe it is very important to have a good connection, chemistry what many call it, and mutual respect between coach and the player. When making a commitment, being patient on both sides is crucial. The learning process takes time and it's never a quick fix. It takes time to make changes and improve. When a teacher and student click it is important to give training a considerable amount of time. Approximately six months to a year.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
It is important for students to determine realistic goals; short and long term. Are you ready and willing to commit to achieving these goals? A good teacher will sit down with you and help to make a game plan placing you on the right path to achieve it.
