Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First meeting is an introduction to the sport/activity and an introduction to each participitant/parent/team or coach. I cover safety, hydration, stretching, physical and mental aspect of competitive training for the student. I also make sure everyone has proper gear and equipment.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been an athletic coach for over 20 years. I have coached at both the youth and adult recreational level, Middle School, and High School level. I currently am a coach at Sebastian River High School in Sebastian Florida and have coached Football, Baseball and Track and Field for the last 10 years. I also teach PE and Weight Lifting.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
For all lessons but Golf I charge $65 per hour. Most private lessons are 1 hour. I have a team of specialists for most sports if specialized instruction is needed. I do charge a group rate for more than 5 of $300 for two hours. For Golf I charge a $100 per lesson. That lesson is with a PGA Certified Pro Instructor. I use a seperate person because I am not able to teach Golf.
How did you get started teaching?
Believe it or not I was ordered to by my first Commanding Officer while serving in the US Navy. His son was a principle at a local middle school and he asked me (ordered me) to coach the schools baseball team. I enjoyed every minute of it.
What types of students have you worked with?
Middle School and High School - some adults for outdoors sports like shooting, archery and fishing
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
My middle son plays football for Troy University a NCAA D! FCS team in the Sun-Belt Conference. I love watching him play.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Hire someone who cares about your future and who has coached others to the places you are trying to go. There are a lot of phony's out there who think they can coach, but look at their pedigree. Do they have the experience? Do they have results? Are they honest about your ability/talent? Do they make you work hard?
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Am I being honest with myself about pursuing this particular sport / activity? Do I love the work more than the play? And how long can I compete at the level I am trying to attain?
