Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I tend to introduce the fundamentals of drawing with charcoal and pencil, then composition and color theory demonstrating how to apply them to your work whether in paint, value scales. etc. We work from still life and photos which at first I provide in a plan, then allow you later to work from your own reference.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
40 years of working in illustrating, and mural work in homes and businesses such as the Olive Garden Restaurants, Indiana Dunes State Park, and homes such as the one featured in the Netflix documentary "Queen of Versaille"
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$240. for four quality 3-hour lessons
How did you get started teaching?
11 years ago I was invited to teach at the Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach and expanded from there to other locations such as Reddi Arts Store, Fleet Landing, and JCA. Now I only take students to my studio and residence. The studio gives me more opportunities to show examples of the lessons and provides a calm clean serene environment in which to work.
What types of students have you worked with?
From ages 6- 80, beginners and experienced alike.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Art with a Heart
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a teacher with a sharp eye, to help you find the best materials, procedures, and practices that quickly help you grasp inspiring results with a minimum of wasted effort. They should have a full grasp of fundamentals, and the ability to communicate those ideas simply and inspirationally to you.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
They should be able to tell the teacher what they are looking for from their lessons, be prepared to use quality materials, and have those needs explained clearly to them
