About

In my years of studying and performing on flute, I have learned that challenges can be overcome. I want to teach the flute because I believe that willing students are capable of learning and improving.

The flute is a beautiful musical instrument, but it is also a tool of self discovery. Learning music teaches you about the composer, their aesthetic style, their background, and their life philosophy. Music is a valuable art because it is capable of portraying ideas through sound. My goal as a performer is to express this. I enjoy being able to shape and mold musicality while playing. My approach is to create as good a sound as possible and that sound will come through in any passage. Good technique must be developed through practice. I see my role as a teacher as giving the student the tools to be able to develop a good technique and sound.

Getting to see students improve.

Frequently asked questions

I have been a teacher in the classroom and in the private studio.  I am interested in teaching research (how people learn).  I am interested in how to effectively communicate musical knowledge with students, whether they be small children or adults.  Although the approach is different for each, the fundamentals of music remain the same ie. rhythms and pitch.

I believe that technique is made up of good habits.  Music is created with the body, therefore physical awareness is vital.  I find that the majority of problems can be solved by good breath, which is a habit that must be taught and reinforced until it becomes a habit.  I am also a conductor and take a holistic approach to learning music--what is important is not only to know my part, but to know what is going on in the parts of others.
