What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I supply basic tutorial instructional videos and material/tool equipment list for different projects. For one on one classes with students who have a specific item they want to bling, we meet in person or via zoom to go over the material make up of the item they want to bling so that they can learn the right tools, glues, stones & techniques to accomplish their goal.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a full-time entrepreneur. And I have been a full-time bling artist for over 12 years. There aren't official certifications for everything that we do in Blingologie yet, but when there are, I'll either be on the board issuing them or first in line!
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
In person lessons are priced at the same rate as labor. Putting on stones one by one for an expert in our group goes at an amazing rate of just $30 an hour. There are lots of rhinestone artists that charge way more per hour for the same level of work that we do...and even more for one on one instruction.
For live virtual lessons however, that $30 an hour goes even further for you because you learn to do your own bling and you won't have to pay that fee again once you learn. For video lessons, it's even less expensive because you pay a flat fee and you can watch the video over and over again.
How did you get started teaching?
I started my business in 2009 making cool bling shirts for my children's elementary school. From there we developed all manner of projects and products using bling. In 2013, We started teaching Blingologie at Florida Atlantic university in Boca Raton for summer camp. And developed a full curriculum for teaching and completing bling projects in classes and at events.
What types of students have you worked with?
We have literally taught Blingologie to students from 8 to 80.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Gabbys Bling Mitzvah! It was the coolest event, I held in a big beautiful mansion in Miami. The hostess supplied us with 40 beautiful velvet book bags and we supplied a selection of dancer themed bling transfers including initials, silhouettes, ballet slippers, etc.
The girls all picked out their initials and the designs they liked best and arranged them on their book bags. They left the book bags for our team to press while they enjoyed the party.
They picked up their book bags at the end of the party and when they left they all had a custom, personalized, blinged out dance book bag to remember Gabby's bat mitzvah by. It was awesome!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Always look for someone with a smile and a pleasant demeanor and tons of patience. Rhinestoning is a tedious process, almost a form of mediation, and you want to learn for someone who has appreciation, understanding and patience for that tediousness.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Don't think, just contact someone with whatever question that pops into your head. Learning to do your own bling is not rocket science, but it requires hands on experience so you don't really have to over think it....just start doing it and then ask whatever questions come to mind.
