Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.
How much do painting classes cost?
Painting classes cost $200 to $500 for a 5- to 10-week course, or $20 to $80 per person for a single session. Local, city-sponsored classes typically cost less than private lessons or college courses. Some painting classes offer discounts for friends, children, or other groups.
Some instructors include all materials in their prices, while others require that you buy some or all of them yourself. Online painting classes can be done anywhere and can be paused as needed without slowing anyone else down.
How long are painting classes?
Painting classes usually last 1 to 3 hours¸ depending on the age group, experience level, and location. Kids' classes are shorter than adult or college-level classes and are sometimes only available during certain hours of the day.
What kind of painting class is best for beginners?
Acrylic paint is best for beginners because it is easy to work with, easy to clean up, and dries quickly. Watercolor paint is also convenient and easy to clean up, but it is harder to work with and correct mistakes. Oil paints are best for beginner or intermediate painters with some experience.
Where can I take painting classes?
You can take painting classes from local rec centers, colleges, private instructors, and paint-and-sip shops. Paint-and-sip businesses provide materials and instructions for students to complete while socializing and drinking or eating.
What do I bring to painting classes?
Some classes provide all of the paint and supplies. Others do not, and you will have to buy your own. This may include any of the following:
Paints
Brushes
Easel
Canvas
Apron

Back in 2013 I took two art classes from Maritza Molina. Basic and advanced drawing. Ms Molina is a talented artist and excellent teacher. She has great credentials being a graduate of the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design. From her I learned good drawing techniques which I apply to my daily work as an artist. I learned about the concepts of form, contour drawing, spatial relationship, positive and negative space, value, shading, etc. Also the more advanced subjects of foreshortening, perspective, still life and portraits. The material presented in class was reinforced by sensible homework. Ms Molina was always prepared, well organized and on time. She’s a cheerful person and very enthusiastic about art. She was a force in motivating her students. I benefited from taking her class and the knowledge I gained is extensive. She’s one of the best teachers I ever had,

He's the best teacher/mentor I ever had, and I don't think I could ever work and learn from anyone better. He's taught me everything I know about oil painting, drawing, photography, engraving -- literally EVERYTHING. He's so inspiring and attentive; he knows how to create almost anything (very well-rounded instructor). I've known Mr. Ouporov for years, he taught me so much about art and gave me the ambition to pursue it as a career. I used to draw little cartoons and disproportionate anime drawings in my sketchbook, and now I'm doing 6ft tall classical oil paintings. There's always a mutual sense of intellectual/artistic engagement, where you always feel like you're being supported, not judged. He's very professional and always enthusiastic to work with students.
