Coach K came into my life during a very difficult time. I had just lost my mom months prior to meeting coach K, and was just going through the motions to survive and make it through each day. At this time, I was depressed and Coach K did everything in her power to keep me going physically, mentally, and emotionally. I was 16, and now at almost 22 years old, she is still one of my very best friends and mentors for every aspect of life. Coach K has a very wide spectrum in ways that she is able to help her community, and at that, impact them. From coaching, mentoring, lending a helping hand, refereeing, substituting, tutoring, and so much more.

Coach K came into our high school math classroom with energy, excitement and a passion to teach students. She took the initiative to develop lesson plans, grade assignment and spend individual time with students when needed. She is AMAZING!!!

She was so amazing. Very patient with my granddaughter. Explained everything to where Juli could understand. And encouraged her. Juli was at ease and felt so comfortable with Coach K. I would recommend her to anyone. Thank you Coach K.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Typical Process:

1. We connect over the phone to discuss the specific area of math that the student is struggling with.

2. The student will send a snapshot of problems needing to solve by text or email to the instructor.

3. We choose a remote meeting location in person or online.

***If in person, we meet at a remote location and if online, the student will be sent a link to join a web meeting, and instruction will follow.  If the student chooses to use the Online method, they will receive a 20% discount off of our hourly rates.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Coach K has been in education for over 16 years.  Math and helping others is her passion.  She has a Master's in Education and a Minor in Security and Intelligence Studies.

Coach K has helped several schools both in New Mexico and in Florida, to create  curriculum, designed to help students relate to the work at hand and to better understand the material through multiple teaching and learning styles.

The following are the key concepts (but not limited to) that Coach K Tutoring can help with:

  • Simplifying Expressions

  • Factoring

  • Linear Systems

  • Substitution & Elimination

  • Graphing Linear Systems

  • Understanding Quadratic Equations

  • Graphing Quadratic Functions in Vertex Form

  • Standard to Vertex Form of Parabolas

How did you get started teaching?

Coach K began working with kids, coaching basketball, volleyball, and softball.  Her passion has always been to help develop young girls into young women through sports and academics.  She began teaching when some of the girls on her team were struggling in their math class, and were not meeting the requirements to play sports for the school.  This was unacceptable to both Coach K and the parents who supported her Coaching.  So, she began having study hall, and she tutored these young girls until they were able to bring their grades up and eligible to play.  That was a little over 16 years ago.

What types of students have you worked with?

Between the ages of 5 - 45.  Elementary to college and regular classrooms to special ed, and everything in between.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

Coach K helped a Senior in high school recently, who was failing Algebra II, and needed to pass this class to graduate.  She took this student under her wing and not only "tutored" them, but gave them the encouragement they needed.  Within 3 weeks, this student went from failing (F), to understanding the concepts allowing them to get their grade to an A.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

To look for a teacher who not only knows the material, however can also integrate different teaching methods when needed.  Each student is completely different when it comes to learning, so why shouldn't a teacher be able to teach different methods?

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

1. Why am I not learning this material?

2. How can I be a better learner?

3. Am I taking notes in class and how can I take better notes?

4. What exactly do I ask of the teacher (ex: instead of asking if there is something they can do to pick up their grade, perhaps ask the teacher if there is a method to help me remember the formula better)?
