Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
If you are a new student I would like to learn a little about you before starting. Have you painted before? If so, in what medium and style?
Once you decide to take my classes I will email you a list of recommended art supplies. If you are already painting you may have most of them.
In the classes you will learn five simple steps which I call "building the foundation for your painting". These steps were developed around the painting techniques used by the French Impressionists near the turn of the century. Wether you are a beginner, or already painting, these basics will be usefull & enlightening!
You can start on any Tuesday morning or Thursday afternoon. There is no "cycle" as such. My classes include seasoned painters as well as beginners. We all learn and inspire each other and the sessions are relaxed and fun.
Most of my students paint with oils, water bases oils, or acrylics, but I would add that the process lends itself best when using oil paints.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
After graduating High School I attended the Newark School of Fine & Industrial Arts, Newark, N.J., and The School of Visual Arts, New York, N.Y. When I was 24 yrs old I quit art school and went to Cape Cod, Massachussets to live at a campsite and spend most of my time painting outdoors, or "plein-air" as it is called. Although my paintings were being shown in a gallery I became discouraged at the small amount of sales, so I went back to New Jersey and worked at display design for various department stores. I took a break from painting and worked in the business world while raising my family, but at the tender age of 50, I rekindled my passion for art and began painting murals for a living while maintaining a steady flow of canvas art which I marketed at local shows in Florida where I now teach, hold workshops, and paint the beaches, skies and tropical landscapes. I recently was awarded 1st place at the Botanical Gardens plein air painting event, an Artist Showcase Award of Exellence in Gulfport, Fl. and Best of Show at the 30th Annual South Pasadena Spring Artfest.
