Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, I find out what the student wants to learn...media, technique, etc. It is very important to know what their experience and level of achievment is. Each student is individual, so it is like a tailor making a garment--one size does not fit all! Then I chart out a program so that learning can occur integrating the "mind" learning with the kinetic activity which builds "experience" and enables "expression." I work along with the student myself, so that we are on "the same page." This is reassuring, especially when we come to difficult areas where we can experiment and share ideas that way.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have worked in visual art since five years of age, when I had a well-known professor of art at Alfred University (New York) taught me (she became my master teacher when she was almost 90 and I was in my 30's). Although my majors in undergrad were history and art, I avoided taking any painting classes, as I wanted to develop by myself. I began teaching at the college level in my early 20's at Cal State Long Beach in art history. After two years of that at Fresno State, I went back to LA for a second masters in film at USC while teaching art history at UCLA (masters in Byzantine art). For the next 4 decades I taught humanities, studio art, film, and art history in colleges and privately in my studio. From 1983 to the present, my painting has been full time, and my first Paris exhibition was in 1995. From 2006-2014 I taught 6,000 children in our school district in 7 public elementary schools, and courses for the Carrollwood Cultural Center near the Tampa studio. The Gouldsboro, Maine studio has been set up in an 1880's farmhouse and barn four years ago (in summer and fall).
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
A two hour session is $80-100; and introductory consultation of an hour to go over student portfolio and desired course of study $50.
How did you get started teaching?
Just by being so energized and excited about learning, learning, and doing, that I had to share it! It is so good to open doors that free people into finding what they already have to start with and develop that initial desire to create.
