About

Hi everyone! My name is Dave Lockwood.

I’ve been teaching guitar lessons in Duluth full time for about 10 years. I’ve come across just about every type of student, and in that time, I’ve learned how to explain things to people in a way that they finally get it.

I’ve learned how to give people just the right amount of push to keep them on track with their goals. Even after almost 30 years of being a guitar player, I still get excited about playing and listening to music. That’s what I enjoy most about teaching – showing students how exciting it can be. Come join the fun!

I'm new to this site, so I don't have any reviews here yet, but I have about 30 reviews elsewhere.

I love watching my students have fun with music, and light up when they learn something new. There's always something new to learn in music!

My daughter has been taking lessons from Dave for just months now and we have already seen substantial improvement in her playing. She gets to learn the guitar while playing her favorite songs.

Ive been working with Dave for several years now and I would highly recommend him. Not only can he teach you the basics and how to play your favorite songs, but if you want to take the guitar to a higher level, he can also help you learn the technique and theory you need to advance in whatever style interests you.

Ive been working with Dave for a few years now, and Ive found him to be a great teacher. I study mostly rock and blues for both electric and acoustic guitar, and started with him as a beginner.
He balances theory with practical playing techniques, and is positive all the time. I would highly recommend him to any level of guitar student.

My 17 year old son has been taking lessons from Dave for over a year. Dave is very patient, focused and flexible in his teaching style. Dave adjusts the lessons to my sons interests while taking into consideration my sons playing ability. My son will come to a lesson with a song that he wants to play and Dave is able to hear the song and then write down the notes and chords for my son to take home and practice during the week. My son really enjoys going to his lesson each week and I would definitely recommend Dave to anyone who is looking to begin, continue or renew playing the guitar.

After 40 years of fooling around with the guitar I decided to actually learn something. Dave seems to know everything about the guitar and music in general. He can play and teach many styles, knows theory and even a lot of interesting trivia. I am working on rock and blues with my electric guitar and finger style with my acoustic. All good and having a great time. I wish I had considered working with Dave a couple of years sooner.

    Frequently asked questions

Whether the student is a beginner or a more advanced student, my first job is to assess where the student needs help, and what their goals should be when they walk in the door.

I will get at least a basic idea in the first lesson - to get the student moving in the right direction - but the full picture of what their goals/needs are usually takes a bit more time - a couple of weeks or so.

I have been playing and studying the guitar for over 30 years.  Along the way, I have to studied with several master level teachers, and continue to study to further my knowledge and abiiities.

I also obtained a master certificate through Berklee College of Music.

    -   My standard lesson rates are $25/30 minute lessons, and $50/hour lessons

    -   I offer a $10 30 minute trial lesson, and then 20% off my standard rate for the following four lesson

    -  Lessons are paid for by the calendar month

I've been teaching full time since 2004.   It didn't take me long to get up and running because I've been an educator in some capacity most of my adult life (counselor, corporate trainer, etc).

There were some bumps in the road (as far as my process goes), but they were smoothed out a long time ago.

I've worked with all kinds of students, literally as young as 5 to as old as 85.  I work with beginner students through professional musicians trying to improve their skill set.

Here's a sampling of the skills that I teach:

    Basic through advanced technique
    Basic through advanced music theory
    Jazz guitar
    Rock guitar
    Blues guitar
    Finger picking guitar
    Classical guitar
    Improvisation
    Composition/songwriting
    Repertoire development

    No, lol

Pay attention to their communication skills.  Do they have a plan to get you organized and moving forward?

    What is your ultimate goal?

Do you simply want to learn to play your favorite songs?  If so, make a list of songs that you'd love to play.

Do you want to be a great blues guitar player?

It's ok if you can't figure these things out right away, but give it some though.

As they say, those that fail to plan, plan to fail.
