Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I want to learn what the students hope to achieve and learn. What kind of art interests them. We want to lean towards their favorite.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Graduated from Art School and have worked successfully with many types of mediums. Graphite/lead, pastels, acrylic and water paints, inks, pottery, some graphic design work, many types of crafting (higher level ideas and carpentry projects), Sewing, and pretty much any kind of creative skills needed for what I am creating.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I believe that 1-2 lessons/classes per week for 2-3 hrs each for most students. Starting at 75$ per lesson. The medium (supplies needed) and level of student can affect pricing.
How did you get started teaching?
At one time, I had considered getting into art education but I fell into another line of work but I have always stayed active and doing pieces and projects. I started teaching my own children and friends and their children.
What types of students have you worked with?
Some children. I think that around 4th or 5th grade is a good age to start additional learning and training as they are old enough to Want to take this extra training and old enough to understand and take directions. Also, teens and adults.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Actually speak with several perspective teachers and have some ideas of what goals you want to achieve with your art. Make sure the teacher is someone that not only is qualified but also creates a fun and interesting learning time to keep students (also adult students) engaged and excited about what they are learning and creating!!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What kind of pictures / painting do you like? Look at other art/ magazines/ drawings? Have sample pics of styles you like. Seeing what the students like will help to create a base with subject matter that keeps students engaged. For instance, Flowers... We would start with simple shaped flowers and then eventually get more detailed flowers and then bunched together, how the lay in front /onto each other then taking that into landscape of whatever. Also consider supplies needed to get started. I usually provide a suggested starter list.
