About
I work with small munbers of students wanting to learn to paint with oil paint and mediums associated with oil. I have a vast knowledge of art history past and present and very layed back way of teaching. Students learn at their own pace. Studing the elements and principles of art as they work on their projects. Sessions are three hours. They may be individual or in groups depending on demand. At this time I am only teaching Saturday mornings. My studio is in South Atlanta at the B Complex.
People paint for different reasons. Some to make money, some for enjoyment, some to escape the anxiety of life, some because its in their blood. I guess I do for all these reasons.
I enjoy working to get juried into shows and winning awards. Most resent award was 2017 Gadsden Arts Center and Museum's Art in Gadsden where I placed 1st. Since then I have been juried into numerous shows in the area and shown at a few of the local festivals.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The way I like to work with students is to gear the class around what they already know. It is sometimes starting from scratch an sometimes working on specific problems.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BFA In art education from Georgia State and a masters in design from Florida State. I have studied locally with Sarah Brown and Mark Chatov.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
yes. Classes are 30.00 per lesson. This comes out to 10.00 per hour. I teach in three hour sessions as you really need a few hours to really get going. I only teach Saturday mornings.
How did you get started teaching?
Ha that’s funny. The need to eat. I taught in the public school system but hated it. Took up too much of my painting time. A friend suggested I teach privately since I had the space. So I am trying that and life is better when you have students who want to learn.
What types of students have you worked with?
I prefer working with students over twenty. Adults and seniors. Male, female or other. Students with a desire to learn.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Last years total solar eclipse, drove to Tennessee to watch it. Also like the Atlanta Lantern Festival. Good subject matter to paint.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone you personally like. That will help you obtain your goals. I feel there are so many directions you can go in art/painting. The basics are a must to know, but you should not be afraid to experiment. You have an imagination learn to use it with your skills in painting. Look at my “Imaginary Realism” section on my website. Hopefully you find the site working well. I designed and maintain it myself.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What pre-requisites are needed. I like to try different things. I prefer not painting from a single image. Combining photos or working from a still life. No pre-requisite required. Come as you are.
How many students are in the class. I don’t teach because I need the money, I teach because I like to share ideas. I try to keep my classes small. In doing this if I have you intensely working away, I may choose to paint or do something else nearby while you work. But alway there when you need help. Not to paint it for you but provide instruction.
