About

Hello,

My name is Mike Moon. I've been a full-time photographer for more than 20 years. I specialize in portraits, weddings, product photography and more. I'm also an expert at various kinds of flash, including on-camera, off-camera and powerful strobe lighting for indoor set photography.

Whether you're a beginner, intermediate or expert, I can teach you quickly and efficiently to stand out in this industry.

It's tough to know who to trust for information.Thats where I step in. I’ll teach you anything about photography, from the basics to using flash and post production. I'm an established teacher and have built mulitple photography businesses by training dozens of photographers. I currently shoot weddings at Ember Studio. www.emberwed.com.

I started my career as a combat photojournalist in the U.S. Marine Corps. Then I photographed commercially for The Home Depot for more than a decade. I now shoot weddings for my own business, Ember Studio. I've shot more than 500 weddings in my career.

I also photograph commercially for many large and small clients, including tabletop product photography and products in white.

Throughout the years, I've photographed with all brands of cameras, including Canon (12 years), Nikon (6 years), Pentax Medium format (10 years), Phase One (5 years) and now the incredible Sony A7 iii (1 year.).

My wedding work can be viewed here: www.emberwed.com

My commercial work can be seen here:

I love people. I love capturing emotion, spontaneity and reactions. I love light. I love the technical aspect of our job. I love finding the perfect balance of efficiency and quality in my work process.

Mike is an amazing teacher. He has so much knowledge and experience with all types of photography. He is able to break things down for you in a way that makes it so easy to learn. I always struggled to learn how to use off camera flash but Mike was able to teach it to me in only 2 short sessions. Highly recommend Mike!

I’ve learned more about photography from Mike than anyone. His technical knowledge exceeds that of anyone I’ve ever met. I feel confident using flash and making appropriate lens selections because of my time with Mike. He’s more than that though. He’s gone out of his way to help so many people over the years, and remains a major influence on my life as person.

Mike is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about photography, and he genuinely enjoys teaching it to others. He breaks down complicated terms and techniques for people to help it seem more accessible and actually possible! It is nearly impossible to learn flash photography techniques from a photography book, but learning flash from Mike, and being able to hear it from an actual teacher rather than reading it from a textbook or online, makes all of those numbers, equations, and technical terms clear as day!

I had a great experience working with Mike of Ember studios. Although I consider myself experienced when it comes to studio and on location lighting, events just were not my thing. My process got the job done, but it was a chore. Mike taught me a simple, efficient and effective lighting technique that not only produced stunning event photos, but actually got me to enjoy them for a time. A great system means your not reinventing the wheel each shoot. I was also able to incorporate more smaller flash in my work and less studio strobes for some of my environmental portraiture. I would recommend Mike if you want to improve your event and wedding game, with the added bonus of another tool for your lighting toolbox.

I owned my own business and taught photographers to shoot weddings in a consistent manner that allowed my to sell more than 180 weddings per year with complete customer satisfaction.

Beginners and intermediate. All kinds and ages.

I love my job. Every wedding I photograph quickly becomes my favorite as I get to know the couple and families in front of my lens. A recent destination wedding I shot in Cancun, Mexico, stands out as one of my favorites.

Look for someone who knows and teaches flash. The sooner you learn to control lighting, the better photographer you'll be in the end and the faster your career will progress. It's also a great differentiator today. With all the talk about "natural light," very few people recognize that flash can look completely natural, and even replace the sun on cloudy days, if used properly.
