Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
If they are a beginning student the first question I ask is "what prompted you to want to play the guitar?" Then I determine what music interests them so I can relate to them musically.
After I see how the instrument fits them and their initial capabilities I will design a teaching curriculum that is song based but includes learning and understanding chords, technique, rhythm, soloing and basic harmony. For the younger ones I use various method books that include reading notes and chords.
I keep lessons fun and use new practice technology when applicable to keep students engaged and learning easier and faster.
For the intermediate/advanced player I show them how to organize the neck to learn all of their scales, arpeggios, chord voicings and so they can improvise and jam with others. I teach Jazz, Fusion, Blues, Rock style and others. I do not teach classical guitar.
I am also happy to teach the hobbiest who just wants to learn some songs and play for fun.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My education includes; Berklee College of Music and the Musicians Institute. I was on the faculty at the Musicians Institute for 6 years before opening the Atlanta Institute of Music, an accredited school for musicians.
I have authored multiple guitar books on Hal Leonard, Warner Bros and Carl Fisher Publications and write and record my own original material. My last CD is titled Surfside.
I was the VP of Operations for Camp Jam a teen music camp where I developed curriculum and managed the curriculum and staff. I currently teach and work with Achieve Music in music education and business development.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
For lessons in the home I charge $65 hour, in my studio $55 an hour. I do not teach 30 minute lessons in the home but offer 30 minute lessons in studio for $30.
How did you get started teaching?
After graduating from Musicians Institute I was aked to remain on staff, I also helped start their summer session program.
What types of students have you worked with?
Group classes of 5 year olds
Students with attention deficit disorder
Private students ages 5 to 80, beginner to advanced
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I am always excited to see former students working in the music field, one just took the stage with some heavy hitters and really made me smile.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look at their credentials, education and how long have they been teaching. Be very specific about what you want to learn, that is very important. Most teachers are known for something they are best at. Dont HIRE someone that is a fingerpicker if you want to learn jazz, ask the teacher what his/her strngths are
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What they want to learn
Why they want to learn
Are they ready for the commitment
Where do they want to be in 5 years
Are they comftorable with the teacher
Is the teacher a proven professional?
