Sheyla Stevens Art
About
I focus on helping students achieve works of art that satisfy their own personal style and approach. Lessons are customized based on student's skill level and interests.
The most gratifying moment is when a student learns a skill or achieves a milestone that inspires them to deepen their artistic practice. Encouraging, witnessing and walking someone break through and overcome their own challenges is definitely a passion for me and an incredible honor to witness.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We will do an initial meet up (online or by phone) to discuss creative goals, skill level and interests. Together we will immediately create a realistic plan for achieving your creative goals. If you hire me, I will e-mail you within 36 hours your first assignment and a schedule of subsequent lessons.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I took drawing, composition and design classes in collgee. My husband joined the military and I have been traveling so I was not able to finish my degree. But that did not stop me from advancing my skills. I have taken online classes specific to my medium of choice which is Watercolor Paints for many years. The years of practice and experience is what I like to share with my students. I am proficient in drawing, watercolor painting and gouache painting.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Yes, the mininum rate is $45 for a 1 hour lesson of active instruction. During this time you will get painting demonstrations and guidance through your own practice. This rate is for time of active instruction but my lessons are created so you will benefit from them beyond the lesson setting. You will get various exercises and assignments and we will not meet again until a week or two afterwards to measure and discuss your progress. The subsequent lessons are scheduled depending on your needs. Assignments and practice exercises will be provided and their completion is essential. I will also provide limited e-mail support on assignments. Practice outside the lesson instruction time is essential so you can benefit fully from the one-on-one time we spend.
How did you get started teaching?
I am a Waldorf homeschooling mom. My teaching methods are based on an educational philosophy by Rudolf Steiner which is heavily based on art and creativity. I have been an educator since 2010. I began educating pre-school aged children in military installations. I then got pregnant and homeschooled my own children through 4th grade. I have taught art, drawing, painting and calligraphy among other subjects to children from the ages 4-17.
Now that I have been professionally painting for over 10 years I am ready to share my knowledge and experience.
What types of students have you worked with?
Children, boys, girls and teenagers in a homeschool settings and also in co-op setting environments.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I am an avid nature painter and I visit local botanical gardens in Oahu weekly to get inspired and to practice my skills. I also snorkel weekly and paint plein-air during my trips to the beach.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The best teacher is the one who will work with you to help you find a unique artistic voice and style. A great teacher will consider your interests and influences and will help you become a proficient painter. Watercolor is a beautiful medium and all you need is someone who has had a few years of experience and who loves it to help you discover its beauty.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Consider and discuss time availability, budget, supplies for the appropriate level, skill level assessment, skills goals, and frequency of meetings with your instructor. These are essential bits of information.
