Dr. Bowlby is a creative and imaginative thinker who demands the best from his students. His approach to teaching composition enables his pupils to think beyond the confines of a textbook and explore their artistic abilities in a very organic way. He is patient and encouraging, and supports his students in their quests to discover their unique compositional voices. Dr. Bowlby is a brilliant mind, an exquisite composer, and a mentor to aspiring musicians.

He allowed me the ability to be creative while still being flexible enough to make clear goals for me to accomplish. Dr. Bowlby was very effective at challenging me to do greater things than I thought I could do and also adapting to my strengths and weaknesses. I would absolutely take this class again.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start by trying to get as accurate a picture of my student's background and experience in music in general and composition in particualr. This usually happens in a couple of conversations.
After that, I have can start to devise things for him/her to begin working towards increasing facility in writing music -- which isn't the same as "composing," which literally means putting together, but doesn't necessarily entail the ability to WRITE something down.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have four degrees in music, including a DMA (i.e., Doctor of Musical Arts) in composition/theory from the University of Illinois.
