About this pro

Since 1991, I have been offering photography programs to students in a friendly, casual atmosphere. Our classes have equal part instruction and hands-on experience. As a working professional, uses her experience of on-location assignments to aid the students in real life photographic situations.

Courses include: Digital Photography, Digital Photography and Using the Computer, Advanced Digital SLR Photography, and Composition. Below are descriptions of the listed courses.

i enjoy sharing the different techniques available, whether it is camera or photo editing. The main goal is to have students work with the camera in class so they are comfortable practicing and using it on their own. So it all just makes sense!

I'll start by saying I'm so glad, and grateful to have found Laurie! Not only is she extremely knowledgeable, she's also a good listener, has great patience, and answers any and all questions you have. She works at YOUR speed, not HER'S. I took a four session block of private lessons with her, and learned so much! She video recorded all of it, so I can refer back to it anytime I feel the need. Bottom line... I would highly recommend Laurie Piton as a photography teacher! I plan on taking future, more advanced lessons from her in the future.

I have a newer Nikon prosumer camera and I hired Laurie to become more familiar and comfortable with using it. Especially when leaving the safety of “auto” mode! Laurie was responsive to email and text and structured and organized in her communication. She was always on time and prepared, yet flexible on an occasion when I had to reschedule. She provided expert level instruction with a casualness in her approach that made the lessons very comfortable. This allowed for pausing on a topic for more discussion, open dialog and side questions to align to my specific goals and interests without needing to “follow a script”. I was able to repurpose one lesson to a specific topic of interest for me. She leveraged technology to share her camera, self-video or laptop screen as appropriate to the subject matter being discussed, so audible and visual learning were always aligned. She would ensure the learning topics were hitting home through pauses and questions and wouldn’t hesitate to repeat or revisit a topic later in a session or during the next lesson. We were able to engage the full set of initial lessons virtually – at my request – which works great during a pandemic given I wanted to start right away. For all of these reasons, I would highly recommend Laurie.

Shes a wonderful teacher. She walks you through each step and is there to assist when your stuck. If she realizes you are lost or do not understand the method she is extremely thorough and walks you through each step until its mastered. She also moves at your pace and only moves on to the next step until your comfortable. If she realizes your stumbling on a certain area she will look for ways to improve or simplify that step for you. Outstanding teacher cant say enough amazing things. Very patient and thorough.

Laurie is very creative and shares this with her students. She is also very patient and helpful every step if the way. I want to continue to learn from her as she has so much to teach. Absolutely love her and I feel lucky to have found her to teach me.

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

We determine together what the student has tried, did any pitfalls happen, what did the "bad photo" look like. Then we start to fix it or begin to learn it. I can have new students understand the camera and use Manual Mode successfully.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Studied commercial photograhy. Since the age of 7, i have always used a camera. Currently always practicing and using new gear to share the info with my students.
