Yuen Yee is an active music instructor and performer currently located in Chicago, IL. She held a Master's degree in Music Performance from Roosevelt University. Yuen Yee has been teaching Clarinet, Saxophone and Piano for more than 12 years to hundreds of students from age 3 to adult in both private and classroom settings. Her students had won several music competitions and auditions to youth bands. She believe every child and adult can play and enjoy music. Her goal is to bring music into your life and help her students to build interest and professionalism in music performing.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Getting to know each other is important for the start of a teacher-student relationship. For the first lesson or meeting, I usually spend some extra time exploring what the student's goals and plans are as well as their interests in different types of music and in life in general that might help connecting music and their lifestyle.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Master of Music Performance (Roosevelt University);
Bachelor of Arts in General Music (Hong Kong Baptist University);
ABRSM Grade 8 Certificates in Piano and Clarinet;
Work training at local music schools in Chicago and suburbs.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Piano and Music Theory Lessons are $35 per 30min, $45 per 45min, $55 per hour. Woodwinds lessons are $45 per 30min, $55 per 45min, $65 per hour. Optional traveling fee of $5-15 per visit.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching officially in 2007 when I first got accepted in music college where I was invited to teach classes and lessons in both public schools and private music schools with the support from my music teachers and training/advices from employers and schools. Previously to my "real" teaching, I was acting as teaching assistant and piano accompanist in middle-high schools in service of music classes in school, public performances, exams, festivals, etc.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students from age 3 to adult ages 80+ of all levels from absolute beginners to professionals. Also worked with students with special needs including Austism, ADHD, and patients recovering from brain tumor, cancer and injury.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I put time, effort and passion into all events I work with, whether it's a professional performance, a lecture, student recitals, retirement homes entertainment, presentations in elementary schools, outdoor shows, a recording session, a special project or just one meeting or lesson. I'm currently recording a full-length original album with my husband (who is a local singer-songwriter) and we have been working on it for almost two years now!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
While I keep my lessons convenient and affordable, I would suggest students to choose a teacher that provides the best result and help to achieve their goals in the long term instead of simply comparing price and distance. Feel free to contact the potential teachers with any questions and be open in communications.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Short term goals, Long term goals, Any wonders and thoughts, All kinds of questions. Never be afraid to ask. Teachers are here to help and happy to accommodate your needs or refer you to another teacher that would suit you better.
