About

In 2023, I heard a saying that 'all education is self-acquired, because no one can educate another'. (quote Napoleon Hill).

Learning by creating and shooting my own self-assigned projects

turned me from a shy person into someone who is following her true dream to make photo stories and portraits of families as her own artistic profession.

This is the year to improve your skills with an enthusiastic teacher! No question is too small!

As a novice photographer, I cant say enough about Dorothy Perry. I admire her quiet confidence and creative energy. As a teacher and instructor, she definitely knows her way around the camera. Dorothy brings many years of experience in that regard. She has an easy grace in the way that she communicates, and can definitely help you to make order out of chaos. Technique isnt enough...there needs to be a thoughtful soulfulness to viewing your subject in the best light!

    Frequently asked questions

I encourage every interested new student to book ONE SINGLE LESSON so they can have a Fact-Finder session with me!

My Fact Finder session is a laser focused, personal 30 minute virtual conversation through Zoom, 100% guaranteed for specific, personalized direction (cameras, apps, techniques, anything!) that can be used for practice, and improving photography skills.

Please message me to see the schedule open for these Zoom calls.

If you choose to purchase a SECOND CLASS, also a virtual Zoom call, I will include a specific photo project for your special interest, that will also help you be aware of more great things around you!

    For your success, Dorothy

I have been an artist all my life, and graduated with a degree in painting and fine arts.  I have also been tested for a high ability to see and create ideas intuitively.
It has just been recently that I am blending these different artistic skills into my photography and into my teaching photography as wlll.
I am able to create a one-day course which is perfect for an edit of a project, a short course of four or six lessons, or an a la carte open 'independent study' tailored to the students' interest.

I was a mom living in a city with uneven quality schools.  I homeschooled my daughter (she became a teacher herself) and 6 years later, homeschooled my special needs. I am an autodidact, and tell all the people I know that they can teach themselves what they choose to learn.

I have worked with adults, upper grade school and high school students in afterschool arts programs in Chicago, helping them with their ideas and projects, printing and hanging their work, and answering questions about careers in photography.

I had a creative assignment making portraits of a family and their small children in their beautiful, historic home.  I enjoyed their play as I captured portraits of them that will bring their parents years of happiness.

A student looking to hire a teacher like me would be someone who is practicing photography and looking for opportunities to improve.  I would be someone focused on their development and assisting them to make more rapid advancement.

There are no wrong questions, but I would ask that they be practicing on their own: I don't give a lot of homework, but you learn a LOT when you set a goal to go out and photograph something at least a couple of times a week.
