About

Please see that I only teach digital photography. To people in Chicago that I can meet in person.

Not film. Not film developing. Not out of state. And not online.

I am a photojournalist style photographer, and what I teach.

So, this is the year to improve your skills with an enthusiastic teacher! No question is too small!

As a novice photographer, I cant say enough about Dorothy Perry. I admire her quiet confidence and creative energy. As a teacher and instructor, she definitely knows her way around the camera. Dorothy brings many years of experience in that regard. She has an easy grace in the way that she communicates, and can definitely help you to make order out of chaos. Technique isnt enough...there needs to be a thoughtful soulfulness to viewing your subject in the best light!

    Frequently asked questions

I have been an artist all my life and graduated with a BFA degree in painting and fine arts. I have also been tested for a high ability to see and create ideas intuitively. It has just been recently that I am using both sets of eyes into my photography and instruction as well.
I keep things extremely simple. $125 per photo lesson of around 90 minutes.
I was a mom living in a city with uneven quality schools. I homeschooled my daughter (she became a teacher herself) and 6 years later, homeschooled my special needs son. I am a DIY type of person and autodidact (someone who teaches themselves.) Everyone they can teach themselves what they choose to learn. 'All education is self-acquired, because no one can educate another'. (quote Napoleon Hill).
I have worked with adults, upper grade school and high school students in different afterschool arts programs in Chicago, helping them with their ideas and projects, printing and hanging their work, and answering questions about careers in photography.
A student looking to hire a teacher like me would be someone who is practicing photography and looking for opportunities to improve.
How adept are you at currently using your specific camera? Do you look at your photos on screens beyond your phone? Do you print your own photos or get them printed?
