What is your typical process for working with a new student?
During the first lesson(s), I assess the interest and skill level of the student, learn of his/her goals, and from there, design lesson plans to meet those goals. Lessons incude work on tone development, scales, decoding rhythms, etudes, solo reperatoire, duets, sight reading and an introduction to jazz if desired.

How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching privately when in high school and have never stopped. 34 years as a band director of grades 4-8 in Deerfield, IL and 40 years of experience teaching clarinet from beginner to adult allow me to share the knowledge of my teachers with my experience as a teacher to meet the needs of a wide variety of student learners.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Home practice is needed for self improvement.
