About

A dedicated teacher with over 24 years experience, I offer lessons to students of all ages in Classical, Jazz, Bluegrass, and Rock styles using a combination of the Suzuki method as well as my own unique brand of education. My main teaching goals are to help students develop a solid technical foundation while fostering a love of music in all its forms.

I have taught in North Carolina at Suzuki School of the Arts and Northview Middle School, private lessons in South Korea, and in Chicago at Hyde Park Suzuki Institute. I currently teach private lessons in Hyde Park, Galewood, River Forest, and online via Skype.

I love teaching students of all ages! The violin is one of the most difficult instruments to play, and even more difficult without good instruction. I emphasize proper technique, especially in the beginning stages of a students learning, and I love to help students acheive their goals. There is nothing more satisfying than guiding a student to a breakthrough, whether it is with a challenging technical issue or a complex passage of music!

Ethan is a wonderful violin teacher. I signed my 9 yo daughter, who has ADHD, up for a 30 minute lesson, once a week. Ethan has been patient, kind, positive and flexible with us, and our sometimes moving schedule. He is prepared and knowledgeable about all things violin. He knows how to help a beginner learn and get comfortable with their instrument. He has great suggestions for practice, lets me take video snippets of the lessons so that I can help my child with practice, and helps her to feel like she can play to the best of her beginning ability. She enjoys his teaching style. I like him because he is punctual, flexible, and reliable. I appreciate the differences in levels of teaching and ages. He teaches beginning children like mine, and also has others that are much more advanced. I highly recommend Ethan as a violin teacher. I feel lucky to have found him.

We highly recommend Ethan! His genuine warmth and gentle leadership style brings tremendous value to my kids learning journey. We look forward to weekly lessons and the continued steady growth that comes from them. Ethans musical talent is deeply inspiring but we get so much more from the investment in lessons. We are grateful for the inclusive environment hes cultivated, his patience, encouragement, and joy of teaching.

Hes very personable and clearly has a vast musical knowledge in many different styles of playing. I also like the way he explains things very simple to understand, and I know he will show you a certain technique to reinforce learning.

Ethan is a great violin teacher, and so supportive. It’s a really great instrument, and he has helped me improve at each song. I like to try different techniques, and to get a better sound and intonation. Ethan is very talented!

    Frequently asked questions

I believe students learn best by ear when just beginning to play the violin, as learning the proper hold for the instrument and bow can be hampered by learning to read notes at the same time. That being said I also feel that learning to read music is very important and should be started as soon as possible after the age of 7.

I have taken Suzuki book 1 and 2 training with Ed Kreitman and Rudy Hazuka. I also studied classical violin performance at Roosevelt University and Appalachian State University.

I run 12 week semesters and charge the following rates for 12 lessons:

    30 minute lessons: $500

    45 minute lessons: $720

    60 minute lessons: $900

I also offer the first lesson free.

I moved to North Carolina in 2000 and began teaching at the Suzuki School of the Arts in Hickory. The first year I had 32 students, so it was a great learning experience for me! I taught private lessons as well as group lessons, and also was Assistant Orchestra Director at Northview Middle School.

I have worked with students of all ages, from 2.5 years up to adults. I believe that with enough patience and persistance anyone can learn to play the violin, and I tailor my approach to each students individual needs and desires.

Finding a teacher who is a good fit for the student is critical. This is why i offer a free trial lesson
