Hi there! I've been playing flute for over 20 years and I'm crazy enthusiastic about teaching new musicians to love it as much as I do! In lessons with me, we will be a little silly. I like to play games and laugh and make music a fun experience for everyone. Don't get me wrong - we do work hard and we reach goals like it's no one's business. Not only do you get to learn the fundamentals of playing flute, but I also integrate music theory training and music history into lessons. We work in a mindful way, incorporating body learning and mindfulness into lessons so we can take away valuable life skills, including injury prevention, mindful observation, confidence building, and stress management.     Frequently asked questions

    Our first lesson will be a little playing and a little talking. We talk about your goals, your past experiences, and why you're here. What you want is hugely important to this process. This way I can tailor your curriculum to your needs specifically rather than just using a premade template that works well for someone else. Once we've decided on some goals, then we will do some playing and work on some immediate changes we can make to improve your playing. 

    Depending on your level of playing, I typically like to assign a warm-up, a technical exercise, a scale, and one repertoire piece to start.

    Working together is key - we are partners in your musical journey, so practice is important. We do work with practice logs, but they aren't graded and we talk through how much you should be practicing per day in order to improve. 

    I earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Production, with a year of coursework in Music Education. I also attended the prestigious South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, where I earned a diploma of excellence in the arts, majoring in flute performance.
    $60 per hour for weekly lessons, with special rates for group lessons. Please reach out for more information.
    I was inspired to become a teacher by my good friend and mentor, my original music teacher at the Marion County School of Music when I was 9 years old. She pushed me to follow that dream, so I began teaching beginner lessons while in high school and continued on through college teaching. My career took a turn towards technology for a while, but I found myself missing my students and missing being able to dedicate my life to spreading the joy of flute, so I turned my career back to teaching full-time.
    Most of my students are ages 8 and up and have typically begun band and are looking to improve beyond the scope of what a band director can provide. I also teach adults, many of which are picking up the flute for the first time or picking it up again after a long hiatus. Mostly, I love teaching the students that really want to be here and have fun, regardless of skill level or ability. Music is meant to be enjoyed by all!
    I recently had the pleasure of performing alongside a local piano teacher at her annual spring student recital. We wanted to kick off the recital with a difficult, non-standard piece to showcase what two musicians can do when they collaborate. Not only was it an incredibly fun experience to collaborate on a Piazzola Tango, but it was also so beautiful to get to watch her students show off their hard work.

    Ask questions! Make sure the teacher is going to work well for YOUR style of learning. There truly is a teacher out there for everyone and I believe that if you ask the right questions, you can find them.

    Ask yourself, how do I learn best? Ask yourself in what situations have you thrived and worked the hardest in the past? What were those teachers doing that inspired you? Ask what your goals are for music - is it going to be a fun hobby or do you plan on pursuing a career? Ask yourself how much time you have to practice in a given day or week?
