Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I offer a free consultation where we get to know one another. I like to find out about the students tastes and experience level. At that point we can find out what the student would like to focus on and how to make those dreams become realities.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Master classes in theory and improvisation at Bellarmine College and at the University of Louisville with Jamey Aebersold. Private instruction with the great jazz guitarist Jack Brengle here in Louisville. Over 50 years of experience performing, teaching and repairing. I've played throughout the United States as well as Canada, England and Japan and shared the stage with The Platters, The Crystals, Molly Hatchett, Head East and others. I currently play solo as well as with local favorites Nobody'z Bizzness at Stevie Ray's Blues Bar and at the Kentucky State Fair.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$25 for a 1/2 hour weekly lesson payable monthly in blocks of 4-5 lessons. $15 for each additional 1/2 hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I started playing at 14 and after gaining a level of experience and proficiency, I found teaching a very rewarding way to share my knowledge and insights. Teaching first at a local music store, I soon alternated between touring and teaching I now have my own studio where I can help more people and make a positive contribution to the musical community.
What types of students have you worked with?
All types, young and old, experienced players and beginners.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I was really happy with my last recital in December of 2016. All the students had a good time and really rose to the occasion.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Be sure that you and the teacher have a good rapport and that you feel comfortable being yourself. The teacher should be able to patiently explain the concepts you want to learn and communicate simply and effectively. The teacher should be able to set reasonable goals and help the student understand the learning process.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How much time will they be able to spend with the instrument?
Is the instrument of good quality, set up well and the right type and size?
Does the student have a disabiity?
Is the home practice environment relaxed and comfortable?
