I believe my experience working in the music industry as a published composer and performer as well as my teaching experience at all levels brings a hands on approach with an eye towards the practical and useful.
As an award winning composer and arranger, John Leavitt has published across all media and genres. Many of his compositions and arrangements have become standard repertoire being performed in countries across the globe. As a performer, he has recorded twenty or so albums of choral, orchestra, and piano music.
I enjoy sharing my experience in composition, arranging, performance, and publishing. I try to blend all of these experiences into my teaching to give a broader perspective when composing or arranging.
I teach band and chorus at a middle school in New Hampshire. John has been my composition teacher for years. He is supportive and insightful. I am fortunate as you will be to have John Leavitt as your music teacher.
I have been taking composition/conducting lessons with Dr Leavitt for 2 years now and it has changed my life! He is without doubt the best music educator you will ever find. Please do not miss out on this opportunity if you are interested in it!
I evaluate the student's background and ask what their goals are. I plan a pragmatic path of study with the student's input.
I studied with with Pulitzer Prize Nominee Walter Mays (composition) and Paul Reed (piano) during my Master's degree at Wichita State (KS) University.
I studied with Gerald Kemner (composition) and Eph Ehly (conducting) during my Doctoral degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music.
My preferred lesson lengths are 60 minutes. I can offer shorter lessons of 30 or 45 minutes and longer lesson lengths up to two hours. I charge per lesson. Since writing or arranging music is project oriented, I suggest having lessons at least every 2 weeks. If the student is a faster worker, we can meet weekly.
When I was a teenager, my piano teacher had me teach beginning piano lessons to students when her studio was full.
