Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I evaluate the student's background and ask what their goals are. I plan a pragmatic path of study with the student's input.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I studied with with Pulitzer Prize Nominee Walter Mays (composition) and Paul Reed (piano) during my Master's degree at Wichita State (KS) University.
I studied with Gerald Kemner (composition) and Eph Ehly (conducting) during my Doctoral degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My preferred lesson lengths are 60 minutes. I can offer shorter lessons of 30 or 45 minutes and longer lesson lengths up to two hours. I charge per lesson. Since writing or arranging music is project oriented, I suggest having lessons at least every 2 weeks. If the student is a faster worker, we can meet weekly.
How did you get started teaching?
When I was a teenager, my piano teacher had me teach beginning piano lessons to students when her studio was full.
