I am passiobnate about making artful and fascinating photographs. Sometimes what I select may be off beat, but helping you find your style with confidence is the best way I can help you grow.
Yes there are basic principles to employ but ultimately it is your vision, your art that makes a connection to viewers as the fundamental outcome.
It is never about the equipment you use as you learn. I have sold 16"x24"prints made with an early 3.2 megapixel camera. Learn the tools of the craft so you can choose your approach to every situation.
I will encourage you to get your precious images out of a digital environment and into a print, book or greeting card. Digital results are fine but having a piece of your work to physically hand to someone is the best connection I experience following the initial session wih a client.
Relatives are very difficult subjects. they can be shy, self concious or belligerent. There are multiple strategies to help a subject relax. A portrait is made by two parties. The subject and the photographer!

I have taken photographs around the world. I started very young and I regret not sticking with photography as the core of my career. In my Asian and European travels I shot on film and kept at the work through my mid 20s. Then graduate school in television and film. I was a television director/producer in the U.S. and abroad and regained photography as my primary outlet in my 60's.
I have never been happier and I think it shows.
Each individual has a unique vision for their photography. Making the transition from looking to seeing was a huge discovery that brought life to my work. I can find interesting images in most any setting. I challenge you to begin to see the end work you desire just before you press the shutter button.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
It all begins with listening to the goals someone has. Then through multiple shooting situations a trust can be established. I consider myself to be a coach to walk alongside a fellow photographer. As mutual trust grows the critique of the works accomplished can become more direct. Not in a harsh way ever, but to recognize someones strengths and suggest how an image might be improved.
For some the learning curve is very fragile because a photographer may not be able to differentiate between the photograph and themselves personally. A photograph is an object represnting a moment in time and place. Yes it's your image but it is not you. Subtle differences but growth happens with many attempts to have your craft match your vision in print.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have studied my art throughout my career, even when not doing still photography full time.
I made images via video for the SuperDome, large events in Orlando, Philadelphia, Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver as as well as in Nairobi Kenya and Harare Zimbabwe. Encounter multiple cultures across the world has given me the sense ofbelong, where my camera is a tcket to document and never a weapon.
