Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
- Get an understanding/feel of their skill level, their knowledge of the game rules and how the game is played.
- Figure out their goal.
- Explain to them what it might require of them to reach their specific goal(s).
- Teach them the necessary drills & the mindset to keep improving.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
- Bachelor of Science in Sports Management.
- Studied health and fitness; strength & conditioning training; and second level sports coaching.
- Played basketball successfully at every level.
How did you get started teaching?
I started by just helping my teammates out. As a player I've always understood what my coaches were asking out of me and my teammates, and sometimes I could explain it in a simpler manner then my coaches could to some of my teammates. I've had many coaches; I learned a lot from them and was able to simplify what is necessary to be not only skilled but to also be intelligent at playing basketball.
What types of students have you worked with?
• As young and inexperienced as 6th graders
• As old and experienced as professional players and adults trying to stay sharp for local Men’s basketball leagues.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure they are teaching you the game. Skills will come with time and practice. However there's a lot of skillful players with little understanding/intelligence of the game.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Ask yourself why you want to play basketball? Whatever the answers are, make sure it's also for the love of it.
Also, how far are you willing to go to reach your basketball goals? What are you willing to sacrifice?
