We will always start with basics, so we can assess a student's understanding of foundational drawing along with how to blend primary and secondary colors. When you have an understanding of your light source and focal points and have trained your eye to see how an object or person is constructed, you can powerfully choose to paint in a realistic or abstract manner. your ability to see what is and isn't there gives you your most bold expression.
I'd prefer students begin in a class with a few students. There is power in seeing others' work, to see their approach and how each person grows. Sometimes you may hear a question or a challenge you yourself are facing but don't know how to articulate.
I enjoy discovering what students love about art, so we can get to work training their ability to see ... so they can begin to express themselves with greater confidence.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I'm a graduate of Vesper George School of Art with a focus on design and advertising. I also studied privately in portraiture and still life with Robert Cormier and Robert Douglas Hunter (both classically trained in tradition of the Boston School) and protégés of R.H.Ives Gammell)
My paintings and photography have been in numerous solo and group exhibits over the years.
I have also painted murals for community projects in England.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look at this time as a special appointment or date and honor the schedule you set. This can be a meditative experience for you. Painting and drawing are generally solitary activities and a wonderful time to regenerate whether you do this quietly, listen to classical music or classic rock! You will strengthen you ability to be with yourself.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are your short term and long term goals with working with a teacher or coach? How much time are you willing to devote to practicing?
The best way to improve is by continuing to work at it.
Are you willing to accept coaching designed to challenge what you think you already know?
Are you willing to come to this with a beginner's mind?
