ATS ART
About
My lessons are specifically tailored for each student. I teach based on each person's current level and interests.
I encourage my students, as well as give constructive criticism, to help them grow as artists.
I've taught in a variety of settings, including public and private schools. For five summers I was the children's art teacher at The Old Sculpin Gallery on Martha's Vineyard. I've spent lot of time on Cape Cod, as well.
I am a member and former board member of the Martha's Vineyard Art Association and the Provincetown Art Association. This past summer I lived and worked in Provincetown for two weeks and had a trap shack on the wharf, where I sold my art.

I love art, art history, talking about art, and different mediums and techniques. It is so rewarding seeing students progressing and feeling positive about their work.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to ask about what subjects/styles interest my students, and find out what art materials they are familiar with. We start out with a drawing warm up exercise. I think all students should learn how to really “see” what they are drawing or painting. If they are interested in abstraction, that’s ok, but really looking at life and putting it on paper is the best way to start.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BFA from Green Mountain College in Vermont. Lots of additional coursework at Mass Art, Tufts University, School of the Museum of Fine Arts. I’ve participated in many workshops and residencies, as well. In addition, I am certified to teach PreK-12 Art in Massachusetts.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
No, it depends on length of class, if I need to travel, etc.
How did you get started teaching?
Originally I had interest in teaching at the college level. Then I started teaching preschool about 10 years after graduating from college. After that I became certified to teach pre-K through high school art. Now I mostly just teach privately.
What types of students have you worked with?
All ages from preschool through adult, with varied levels of experience.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Taking my young son to the Discovery Museum in Acton, MA.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for someone who is open minded and willing to teach to your interests.
