Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I typically do a free trial lesson with new students so that we can meet, understand each other's goals, and get a feel for how lessons will happen in the future.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
In 2018, I graduated with my Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Delaware. In 2020, I graduated with my Master of Music in Flute Performance from The Hartt School at the University of Hartford.
How did you get started teaching?
In high school, I realized how much I loved teaching when I would help my friends in band as well as math. I decided to go to college for Music Education to become a band director. I realized halfway through my degree that I loved performing and teaching flute equally, so I went on to do my Master’s in Flute Performance to become a better flutist and teacher. I have been teaching private flute students for 6 years and incorporate everything I have learned into my teaching.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught students from the ages of 6 to over 70 years old! This has ranged from college music majors to first-time players to high schoolers to adults who have picked up the flute for the first time since high school. I teach all levels, beginning to advanced.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently took on a video project for a new flute student where I created a hands-on video of how to play the flute for the first time. In the video, I talk about the parts of the flute, how to breathe, make a sound on the head joint, putting the flute together, and playing first notes. This video is available to my new flute students to watch and rewatch as many times as they need.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would suggest researching several teachers to compare their rates, teaching styles and philosophies, and their expectations for students to see who aligns best with your goals. Consider what ages and levels the teacher typically teaches. If possible, look through their website to see if their style resonates with you or listen to their recordings on YouTube.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Here are some questions students and parents can think through:
What length of lessons do I want to take (60 mins, 45 mins, 30 mins)?
What are my musical goals?
What am I looking to gain from taking lessons?
What kind of teacher am I looking for?
