About
The focus is helping others appreciate nature and science through direct observation using traditional art media. I teach illustration, drawing, painting and print making. My background is in Biology, ecology, wetlands and natural science illustration.
I enjoy seeing others get excited to learn a new media or new technique. It is rewarding to help others see the world around us in a new way. I especially love giving people new found confidence and purpose. I feel that art can be very healing and uplifting in ones life.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first step in working with a student is finding out about their past art experience. Once I know where they are coming from I can design the lessons around what they already know or don’t know. If the student is unsure of what media to work with or what subjects to paint and draw, I will come up with that for them and guide them through how to use the media and how to go through the process of developing a final piece. For drawing I like to start with gesture drawing as a warm up exercise. Students will learn how to create form on a 2-D surface, and realism from direct observation. Students will learn about the color wheel and how to mix colors and about gradients (black, whites and gray tones). I try and make all my students feel comfortable and always give positive encouragement.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a degree in Biology from Bridgewater State College (now University) and a Certificate in Natural Science Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design. I have been teaching art lessons since 2014 and also work as a Conservation Agent protecting wetlands and land in general. I have also been a member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators since 1998 and the New England Chapter of this group since 2000. I am currently the Membership Director for the National Guild.

How did you get started teaching?

What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with kids as young as 6 and teens as old as 19. I have also worked with adults.
