About

With an exhibition history extending over 40 years, Robert Masla is an award winning artist whose work is in many discerning collections, (he has exhibited locally at the R. Michelson Gallery in Northampton for over 25 years). His work has appeared in various books and publications such as: The Artist and the American Landscape, Changing Prospects, The Artists Magazine, Art New England, PleinAir Today & Outdoor Painter. His canvases, landscapes, still lifes, portraits and murals can be found in private residencies, corporations, the hospitality and health care industries, public institutions, restaurants and on film.

He began his formal study of painting at age 11 in the studio of his life long mentor, the 20 century realist master, Alton S. Tobey. From there he went on to receive a Diploma in painting from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston with a BFA from Tufts University and then a Graduate Degree in Painting and Art History from the City College of New York.

During the course of his professional career Masla has also remained dedicated to art as an educator, teaching offering demos and lecturing in various settings with a wide range of populations; in schools, colleges, museums, and workshops. He was the Artist-in-Residence for the City of Springfield, Massachusetts in 2002-05. During that time, he created the Art for Everyone program and received three consecutive grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council for bringing art into the inner-city schools that had no previous art programs. - “I see my teaching as another way of giving back some of the gifts I’ve been blessed with, to share my enthusiasm and joy for painting and the creative process”.

In pursuit of that goal, Robert and his wife Monica Levine founded Casa de los Artistas, Inc. - ArtWorkshopVacations.com and built a home and his Studios South in the charming fishing village of Boca de Tomatlan, 10 miles South of Puerto Vallarta, located on the gorgeous Pacific Coast of Mexico. It is here at the idyllic setting of "The Casa", he along with numerous other invited prominent artist/instructor colleagues teach workshops during the winter months. For the past ten years Masla has primarily focused his teaching at "The Casa", his "Studios South". With the success of the Casa, he is now refocusing some of his energy on lectures, demos and workshops at various locations in the U.S.

I love to see people awaken their own creative energy and see them come alive in connection with the continual discovery of participating in the magic of creation. I love to share the joy and fun of the creative process and witness people discover their creative self.

Frequently asked questions

Review of students goals and expectations as well as experience and level of accomplishment, then setting up a plan to correspond with those goals and experience.

My education is outlined in another section. I have been painting and studying art for over 45 years. And teaching for more than 35 years.

As an undergraduate student teaching private lessons and working in community education centers.

All kinds and all ages, from young children to elderly adults. Absolute beginners to professional artists. The present qualification is for the aspiring student to be serious about learning and having a good time, having fun and making a mess.

To begin, make sure you (and the teacher) understand the difference between criticism and critique. Criticism and Self criticism is the ego and mind grasping not to die when you are merging with the ONE of Creativity. Trying to sneak in the back door to impeede your growth in spirit. Critique is an evaluation - WITHOUT JUDGEMENT -  of what needs to be done to achieve a particular goal. A Real Teacher gives critique with love and support, without a value judgement or ego - understanding to the TRUTH to support learning, growth & change. - A false teacher tries to tear down creativity - pretending to critique - critique is not, nor is ever, a judgement of your value as a human being or an artist - it is an assesment of what needs to be practiced or learned for change and growth, towards an intention - and nothing more - critique is not, nor should ever be criticism.
