I am highly dedicated to the succes and enjoyment of the educational experience I provide. Each student is an individual and recieves a personally crafted and structed lesson experience for thier needs. I have over 25 years of teaching experience teaching private lessons as well traditional classrooms. Music is a language and a physical skill, and my approach is structured to decode and breakdown the mental proceccing of the information taking in with our eyes and ears with the physicality and coordiantion needed to express it. Like any language it starts with your ears. The more you listen and hear it, just as you did as a child, the more it rubs off on you and makes an impresssion. From that seed that music will come out from working on connecting what you hear in your mind & soul to the physical movements of operating an instrumnet that makes it comes to life. It does take practice, dilligence and patience but my motto is "Its not IF it happens..it's WHEN"
Helping students discover themselves and their talent is what I enjoy the most about being a teacher. It is particularly rewarding to me when I can reconnect with my own passion for both music and teaching through a student’s enthusiasm for the art. In addition to my years teaching at in both public & private institutions, I have an extensive professional performance background. I have spent more then 25 years performing and recording in and around the Boston area, throughout the United States, and Europe. My ‘hands-on’ experience in the music business has given me a unique perspective into music as a vocation and has allowed me to impart a relevant knowledge and point of view to my students, something not necessarily available to many educators.
My goal is to have my students to experience meaningful and interesting educational experiences that are relevant to their lives. I accomplish this through a personally stuctured experience. I wnat my students to enjoy and relate to what they are doing. But I also want them to be literate musicians whatever thier level. I do emphasize core music studies to build a solid foundation of musical skills for all of my students. From there, I strive to integrate those skills into the many facets of music such as performance and composition, as well as the vast creative music technology available today.

I picked up the saxophone at age 7 as therapy for a cardiac and respitory issue. Music saved me phsically and gave purpose to my spirit. I have been playing professionally over 35 years but playing without teaching would be impossible for me. They are inextricably linked as each half feeds the other with skills, & experience that could not happen if isolated. My teachers were my heroes and they gave me so much and set the bar for me with thier excellence and compassion. In my tradition I am obligated & honored to pass on that knowledge and love for music given to me to those who are willing to learn.

The feeling of witnessing a student of any age learn and grow to express themselves on thier instrumant is incredibly rewarding to me. To watch them hear a new artist or explore a new piece is really special to me. I do enjoy passing on the art & "dicipline" of music and I do emphasize core music studies to build a solid foundation of musical skills for all of my students. I find there is a simple clean clear beauty in the connection of cause & effect in the study of music that is endlessly facinating. Education is a two way street. I learn as much if not more from my students than they learn from me sometimes. It is an exchange of knowledge and experience that enriches both student & teacher and one I certainly marvel at.

My first lesson always kind of a split between a diagnotic and fact finding mission and a personal "get to know eachother" session. I access thier skill level and knowledge of music and share a concensed version of my approach to teaching. If they have previous experience I have a student play a piece they are familiar with to see where thier strengths are to build on and where thier skills need attention. On the personal side I share with them my own begingings and ask them why they wanted to play music and what in particular drew them to the instrument they chose. I go over the lesson process, do a goals setting excersise and send them out with an assignment of bringing me a list of 5 songs they want to learn. I make sure they understand we its called "PLAYING" music for a reason. It should be done with joy, and skill like any other game, sport , or activity in thier lives no matter thier age.
I have a B.A. in Music Education from Berklee College of Music Class of 1988. Many years of informal training touring on the road with experienced musicians. I am also a Black Belt in Shorin-Ryu a classical Okinawan Karate. I started in my early 40's with my son who was 7 at the time. It was a great experience to share with him as he grew taller than I am now. I also wanted to stay connected to the feeling of being a "beginer" to help keep that connection strong in my teaching. Also to incorporate the philosophy, structure and diciplicne to my own musical life as well as my students. My dojo is a very positive and encourageing invironment and has definitely made me a better teacher through thier methodology and philosophy.
