About

🎸20 years as a guitarist in the U.S. Army

🎸B.A. in Jazz Guitar from Towson University

🎸State-of-the-art setup for online lessons

🎸Extensive work as an audio engineer

As a guitar teacher, my goal is to make complicated musical tasks into an enjoyable activity. Drawing from my diverse experiences as a U.S. Army guitarist, where I played jazz, country, funk, rock, R&B, Dixieland, and more, I've developed the skills to tackle challenging music. Now, I'm eager to pass this knowledge onto you.

Each student is unique, so I don't adhere to a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, I use your individual goals and interests to craft a customized learning plan tailored specifically for you.

Here are some key principles that guide my teaching:

**Customized Learning Plans:** I design lessons based on your interests and goals, no matter what genre of music you like. Personalized learning plans ensure that you stay motivated and engaged.

**Practical Application:** Rather than simply teaching scales or chords, I show you how they are used in actual songs across different genres, demonstrating how theory can be applied to playing music.

**Encourage Creativity:** I create an environment that fosters creativity by encouraging experimentation and improvisation. This not only enhances your musicality but also makes the learning process more enjoyable. I include specific exercises that promote creativity for any musical style.

**Set Achievable Goals:** Breaking down long-term goals into smaller, achievable milestones is essential. Celebrating these milestones boosts your confidence and motivation and helps you stay focused on your musical journey.

**Use Technology:** I integrate technology into lessons, using apps, online tools, and software to enhance your learning experience. This adds an interactive and dynamic element to our sessions.

**Diversify Teaching Materials:** I use a diverse range of teaching materials, including sheet music, tablature, audio recordings, and videos to tailor lessons to your individual learning style.

**Promote a Positive Learning Environment:** Learning a musical instrument can be challenging, so I create a positive and encouraging atmosphere. A supportive environment is key to your progress and enjoyment throughout the learning process.

Whether you prefer in-person or online lessons, I will be your guide for your musical journey. I have an incredible setup for online lessons with four cameras: one for each hand, one for an overall view of the instructor, and one for sharing a book. I can easily share websites, videos, books, and music on the screen. My online setup has enabled me to teach students all over the U.S. and even overseas – in France, Germany, Spain, and Malaysia. For more information, watch my video “My Online Guitar Lesson Setup” (link below). Visit my YouTube channel “Tempee’s Guitar Channel” to view performance videos of me and my students.

Bio.

After attending Berklee College of Music, I joined the Army as a Guitarist. I served in the 82nd Airborne Division Band (North Carolina) and the 1st Infantry Division Band (Germany). While active duty, I played in a variety of bands all over the U.S. and Europe. After eight years on active duty, I served in the Maryland National Guard Band for 12 years. During that time, I earned two associate’s degrees (Music and Business), a certificate in audio engineering from Sheffield Institute for the Recording Arts, and completed the Army Advanced Musicianship course and Army Live Sound Reinforcement course. I earned a B.A. in Jazz Guitar Performance from Towson University in 2009. In addition to teaching and gigging, I worked as a recording engineer and a booking agent. The artists I have worked with include Benny Golson, Ron Carter, George Duke, Kool and the Gang, The Avett Brothers, Rachael Price (Lake Street Dive), Matt Nathanson, Jimmy Cliff, Rusted Root, Les Claypool, Juice Newton, Toni Tennille, Warren Wolf, Ellery Eskelin, and The Air Force Band.

First off, Tempee knows his stuff. He can not only play the guitar but he knows a lot of music theory. Second, he creates a safe learning environment. He is laid back and will listen carefully to what your goals are, whether you want to learn certain songs or you want to learn some music theory or something else and he will adopt the lessons accordingly. You are the driver on this musical journey. Tempee is the experienced guide that will make sure you get to where you want to go and experience/learn some new fun stuff on the way.

Not only does Tempee have a very warm and non-intimidating personality (which makes the lesson environment very comfortable), his musical knowledge is deep and broad. Tempee stresses the layering of chords, arpeggios, and scales in a way that makes you feel like you are not getting bogged down in that scary term music theory and instead youre having fun building your skills. Yet - before you know it - you learned some important concepts about music theory.
My skills as a guitarist definitely increased since taking lessons from Tempee. I also enjoy the fact that Tempee can demonstrate techniques from any great guitarist you can mention (from Django to Hendrix to Wes Montgomery to BB King to Keith Richards to Carlos Santana...).

Tempee is the best guitar instructor I’ve ever had. After 20 years of playing I decided to learn jazz. I have improved more over the last couple of years than I have in the last 8. He’s not afraid to push you when he knows you can do better while also understanding your life situation. His education, experience and modern remote accommodations made him the obvious choice. The remote lessons are convenient and the quality is incredibly high. I can’t say enough about Tempee. Take the plunge and start lessons now you won’t regret it!

Tempee’s virtual set-up enabled me to more closely focus on technique specifics. Further, Tempee is an extraordinary teacher. He is patient, clear, creative, and a master story teller.
As a 53 year old man, I expected progress to come at a snail’s pace. In truth, I quickly let go of my initial needs for progress and began embracing the musical journey.
I could not more enthusiastically recommend Tempee.

Mind blowing! He is so innovative and has such amazingly broad experience. I was skeptical about doing lessons online but his set up, (different cameras pointing to different important views, integration with online videos and teaching tools all c lear and easy to see at just the right times,) was literally better than in person lessons. I am armed with a HUGE cadre of tools and references, approaches and understanding. Now I just need time to sift through it all!
This was candidly one of the best music lesson choices Ive ever made in my life.

    Frequently asked questions

For most new students, the first lesson is about learning and understanding the fretboard, which is fundamental to learning all music styles. Then we progress by focusing on the music that interests the student. I find that students who are playing what they like are more likely to continue to play the guitar. Once we establish a foundation for learning to play the guitar, I may introduce topics in music theory to deepen the student's understanding of the music they are studying.

I have a Bachelors Degree in Jazz Guitar Performance as well as two Associates degrees in Music and Business, and a certificate in Audio Engineering. I completed the Basic Music Course, Staff Sergeant Course and Sound Engineering Course at the Military School of Music. I served a guitarist in the Army for over 20 years. As a guitarist in the Army, I was required to play in many different types of music groups. Jazz combo, big band, dixieland band, funk band, rock band, country band, etc. I also played percussion in the marching band and concert band. My time as a military bandsman gave me the opportunity to perform for audiences all over the United States and Europe.

Yes. $30 per 1/2 hour and $55 per hour for weekly students. $30/$60 for one of students. I give a free 1/2 hour for the first month of weekly lessons.
When I was serving in the Army as a guitarist, people would ask for lessons and I found that I really enjoyed teaching.
I have worked with students of all ages from 5 to 80 and from all walks of life.

Find someone with a lot of experience who can break down a complex task into small steps. These skills are important for a teacher to have

Students should be as clear as possible about their goals and communication those goals to their teacher.
