The immense satisfaction I receive from working with a student over a period of time comes from the opportunity to share my knowledge and skills with them, help them avoid common pitfalls, and show them the most efficient yet thorough personalized approach, and by so doing, to enrich their musical experience, conduct and optimize their journey of growth, and delight in witnessing the spark of joy that is kindled when various hard-won aspects finally come together.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Initially, it is important to assess the student's general musical ability and temperament which can take several lessons. Eventually, strengths and weaknesses are revealed, and a flexible plan forward can be designed with the understanding that this will be under constant adjustment to truly customize the learning approach to that unique individual.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Piano lessons from Peabody Institute as a child. Bachelor's degree from Rutgers University. Masters degree from Mannes School of Music. Doctoral work at Indiana University. Studies with Arnaldo Cohen, Menachem Pressler, and Theodore Lettvin.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching my first lessons while still in high school. Since then I have taught privately as well as through various music schools and colleges.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students as young as 3 1/2 and as old as 80. I work with complete beginners, those preparing for college music lessons, as well as college level students. Among my younger students, many have won and placed in various piano competitions.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would advise a student to find a teacher with professional performing experience and the ability to convey their knowledge and skill to a student. While the emotional aspect of music is the most compelling, the tediously-acquired technical aspect is what allows us to express those feelings/thoughts/moods/ideas. Find a teacher that emphasizes teaching proper, natural, tension-free piano technique from the earliest stages. Frustration from lack of progress due to bad technical habits is, sadly, a common, and unnecessary killer of motivation.
