Short Bio:
Praised by the Baltimore Sun for his exquisite exploration of melodic lines, clarinetist Eric Black is noted for his complex, introspective sound. His performances pull the audience into his world, where the music can be shared on a more intimate level. An active chamber, orchestral and solo musician, he has performed in venues all over the country, from the smallest house concert to the stage of Carnegie Hall. Between 2016 and 2018 Eric served as the principal clarinetist of Marin Alsop’s Conducting Orchestra at the Peabody Conservatory. He performs regularly with multiple chamber ensembles and maintains regular solo appearances. Eric is slated to appear on the upcoming Peabody Symphony Orchestra album, published under the Naxos label, which will feature the music of composer Aaron Jay Kernis and the batons of both Marin Alsop and Leonard Slatkin.
Eric received his Graduate Performance Diploma in Clarinet performance from the Peabody Conservatory in 2018. He currently resides in Baltimore where he maintains an active performing and teaching schedule. He is currently on the faculty of the Park School of Baltimore where he teaches clarinet in their after school music program. His principal teachers include Eugene Mondie, Michele Gingras and John Kurokawa. Additionally, he has performed in masterclasses for many internationally renowned clarinetists, such as; Anthony McGill, Boris Allakhverdyan, Jonathan Gunn, Steve Cohen and Alexander Fiterstein.
Clarinet has been my passion since I began playing 16 years ago. I have spent tens of thousands of hours practicing, taking lessons and performing, all in the pursuit of becoming a professional musician. To be a musician is to have the best job in the world, everyday I get to do what I love. I hope to share that joy and passion with all of my current and future students.
