Hi, My name is Mala Chatterjee and I have been teaching Communicative English for the past 22 years.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Learning involves individual processes. Depending on the student's requirement the process is established. My teaching is learner centric with the teacher as the facilitator and coach. Learner activity is highlighted and organised with feedback.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching English, with Phonetics, Methods of teaching English and Usage of English as some of my papers.

A Master's in English Literature, my special paper was Linguistics.

I also have a certification from ATD in Creating Leadership in organisations.

How did you get started teaching?

In 1996, I resigned from the post of Lecturer in English to start my own Spoken English Institute in Hyderabad, India, because I believed that English being the language for intra as well as international communication I could contribute to learning and enriching students' professional lives.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with students who know just a smattering of English, who speak and write grammatically incorrect English to Corporate honchos who look at bettering their communication, verbal and written.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I took a few sessions for Girl Scouts, teaching them how to make cookies and volcano cakes; I look back in fond memory.

The children were a pleasure to teach; I learnt to be patient with 5 to 7 year olds.

Their enthusiasm and keenness to learn was infectious,time flew past in a jiffy!

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

One should look for a teacher who has linguistic as well as communicative competence, one who is patient with students' errors and has the ability to listen to learner needs and facilitate accordingly.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

Students should analyze

1) Their need. What should I learn and why is it important.

2) How am I going to improve

3) Have realistic expectations

4) What goals will be met
