About this pro

Wherever you are in the art-making process, I will help you grow to the next level. I have worked with advanced and beginner students at almost every age.

Now I am offering my services as an online art teacher and mentor. Instead of traveling to each other we will meet online using Google hangouts.

Each lesson will include modeled instruction, student work time, time to ask questions, and individualized assessment of your work. Depending on age and interest, I will give additional assignments that can be done between lessons.

With over twenty years of experience as an art teacher, my instruction is sequential and individualized to each student. My degrees include a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Syracuse University and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Montclair University. I have taught in both public and private settings in Maryland and Virginia. Currently, I teach K-12 at Redeemer Classical Christian School, Kingsville, MD.

Taking the most reticent student and teaching them to enjoy the process of art and feel success creating gives me great joy. Building art confidence in my young and older students is my first priority. I love to mentor students and encourage them to grow in both technique and creative problem-solving. My focus is on traditional drawing and painting, however, I have taught classes in sculpture, printmaking and mixed media as well. As your art teacher and mentor, I will tailor your instruction to what suits you the best!

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Typically, I ask that the student will show me previous work or I will have them draw something they like during our first time together. We will discuss what they would like to accomplish during our time together and I will set up lessons that are customized to that students needs. We could work on basic drawing techniques, learn in a specific media, or work on a specific subject matter like figure drawing or landscape painting.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Syracuse University and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Montclair University. I have taught in both public and private settings in Maryland and Virginia. Currently, I teach K-12 at Redeemer Classical Christian School, Kingsville, MD.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

Currently, I am offering one on one personalized online art lessons at a rate of $25 dollars for thirty minutes or $40 per hour.

How did you get started teaching?

Before finishing my degree in painting, I realized I had a special skill of helping and encouraging my fellow students in my studio classes. During the summer, I worked as a counselor and art instructor at a summer day camp near my home in New Jersey. These experiences solidified my desire to become an art teacher. I pursued my art teacher certification at a Master's level at Montclair University. I have taught full-time or part-time in public and private settings since then.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with students from preschool through adults. Most of my experience has been working with elementary through High School students at Redeemer Classical Christian School. I developed the sequential art curriculum that incorporates art techniques with art history at an age-appropriate level.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

Look for a teacher who is interested in your individual progress as an artist.  I would also suggest looking at examples of their work and their student's work. Is this the kind of art your art interested in pursuing? If not, keep looking! I would also encourage looking for a teacher with a professional degree in art or teaching or both! It is important that your teacher has depth and can take you to the next level you want to reach.
