HW
Helen W.
Jean Hirons is not only an exceptionally talented and successful pastel artist, she is a dedicated and inspiring coach and mentor to her students. Watching her create a painting is a masters course in composition, color palette selection, and achieving color harmony. Her coaching style may best be described as “tough love.” Her critiques are refreshingly direct and on target. She gives praise only when warranted. You know you are on the right path at those times. When your technique is off track, her clear diagnosis is enormously helpful. She is generous with her time and shares insights and lessons learned for the business of art as well. Through example and guidance she has helped me find and pursue my path as an artist.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I find out their background in pastel and determine how much they need to learn. They participate in regular weekly class exercises and painting and I work one-on-one each week, as needed. I prefer to teach students with some painting background but have taught straight beginners.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
BA in art and many workshops with leading pastel artists in the country.
