The Creative Arts Studio is a full service art studio offering a variety of walk in and by appointment art projects. Additionally, we offer classes on wheel throwing and drawing for adults. Adult painting classes are coming soon! Children can take classes on wheel throwing, drawing, and painting. Our studio is located right in the middle of Downtown Royal Oak. The best part about running an art studio is meeting and conversing with new people everday. From families to couples to single students, we get to know all sorts of people at all different levels of interest and skill. It's also fun to watch the growth from day on of a class to the final day. It's hard to recognize just how much skill and technique you're developing during the journey of a class. But, on the last day, it's amazing to see just how far you've come.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We make sure start from the very basics with all of our new students. Our goal is to build knowledge, and the best way to do this is start from the very beginning. The goal is to be use each skill and technique like a stepping stone, moving towards total mastery by the end of the class.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
We have a number of instructors at our studio. The qualifications of our instructors range from BFAs from University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University to multi-year apprenticeships in their given medium. All of our instructors are highly qualified and have tons of experience working with all types of students.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

How did you get started teaching?
Our studio first opened in 1999 in Novi as a paint your own pottery studio. Our move to Royal Oak afforded us the opportunity to expand into the worlds of canvas, clay, and drawing. We've been teaching wheel throwing and hand building with clay for nearly 15 years, painting on canvas for 6 years, and we're excited be adding drawing as our newest medium.
What types of students have you worked with?
We have worked with all types of students. Children and adults are welcome at our studio and we have classes that cater to both. Some of our students come to us with zero experience and we're able to start to build skills from the ground up. We also work with more experienced students and are able to differentiate our instruction to accommodate higher level instruction.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Recently, a couple of our wheel throwing students decided they were really in love with the medium. They came to us having never touched clay before. They have now taken 4 consecutive introductory courses and were integral in the creation of our new intermediate course. Their interest level outside of our instruction has been inspiring and created some positive energy and change at our studio.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Approach your class with an open mind. Don't be intimitaded if you don't know what you're doing at first, that's why you're taking a class! We're here to help and answer any and all questions. Also, talk to your fellow students. Everyone brings something different to each class, and the groups that learn the most are the ones that feed off eachother.
