After teaching for nearly 40 years, I began a tutoring business which has been going strong for nine years. I have helped countless individuals learn to read when other programs failed them. My background as a Reading Recovery teacher and twenty years of teaching remedial reading and math in the public schools have made all the difference! Besides teaching reading, comprehension, writing, phonics, spelling, English, study skills and test preparation, I also teach art on the side. I earned a Specialist (EdS) degree in reading instruction and a PhD degree in Education from Michigan State University. Before I retired from teaching, I was a Teacher Coach and helped other teachers to improve their practice.

I absolutely love seeing children and families become joyful as they realize progress is occurring when things were looking so dim and children were suffering from failure in school. Once a child starts to really believe in himself/herself again, Learning accelerates! My motto is that “It’s a teacher’s job to arrange victories for the student,” and that is what I do. I usually tutor at a local library or at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Flint a Township. I also tutor at students homes, but at an increased rate.

I have also helped many young people become better artists and I feel such a sense of pride to see their art work get better and better. Some of my students have won prizes in art contests! I currently teach art lessons at the Swartz Creek Art Gallery in Swartz Creek, Michigan. I studied art at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan and the Flint Institute of Art. I have won two purchase awards and one honorable mention in the annual art show jointly sponsored by the Michigan Education Association and the Michigan Art Education Association.
