About
I have 29 years of full time teaching experience and focus on making learning your instrument fun. I use music you like as the basis for learning and also teach many related skills like ear training, music theory, improvisation and music technology. In addition I perform with bands regularly and can show you how to be good performer and band member.
I love sharing the gift of music with others. I've had the privilege of working with hundreds of students closely over the years and the relationships I've developed are priceless. I'm currently in a working band with my former students and am teaching the kids of students I've had in the past. Watching someone grow as a musician is amazing!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First I try to get to know my students and their musical goals. I will ask about their past musical experience (if any) and what made them want to get lessons. This helps me know where to start and ensure they get the most out of the lessons. I really try to tailor the lessons to the students individual needs.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a student of music nearly all of my life. I started on the violin at age six and went on to learn piano, cello and trumpet as well. I played in band, orchestra and sang in choir all through school. At age 12 I was introduced to the guitar by my uncle who was great lover of music. I fell in love with the instrument and have not stoppped playing since. I attended Berklee College of Music in the late 80s where I recieved some of the most valuable musical training of my life. The instructors and other students I met there were very influential in forming the musician I have become.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Currently lesson are $20 / half hour or $40 / hour and meet weekly.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching part time in Boston while I was at Berklee. When I moved to Grand Rapids in the early 90s I began teaching at Middletons Music and my schedule fillled up quickly. Before I knew it I was teaching full time!
